Hello all, I have posted this query in my intro but thought I should probably ask here for more action. I have a return F ASA Melb to Sing QF9 flying 25th May and am looking at buying an economy seat QF5 Sing to Frankfurt 25th May and requesting a points upgrade to J. As I am a bronze I could be requiring a miracle!?? I have 60000 pts left. Any ideas would be very welcome, as is seat/class config info on QF5. Thanks DG.

Hi dragongirl,
Not sure of your success for upgrade request from SIN to FRA, I have never tried (although I fly that route regularly). I would also suggest having a look at their Y+ fares (change the 'flights from' section of the booking engine to Singapore). I have used points to fly PER-SIN-PER and then got a return Y+ fare SIN-FRA-SIN for $AUD2500 for flights in Aug. It may make the flight more bearable in Y+ if you can spare the extra $$, particularly since you will have just arrived from MEL in F. These flights are now selling as J/Y+/Y so it will either be the newly configured 3 class 744 (I think Serfty has recently sampled these) or if its the old 2 class 744 then Y+ pax may be seated in J seats.
cheers
Bert

Hi Bertflyer. Thanx that info is very helpfull. Is there any way of telling if the flight will run as a 2 or 3 class configuration? Also just to clarify, if I book a Y+ seat and it flies as the old 2 class config will I then be sitting in J ?? Thanx DG

Welcome aboard dragongirl. Pick the username because you're a fan of CX, or you just love dragons - or acting like one?? :p

A quick query on Expertflyer shows no award (either ASA, Classic or upgrade) available in either Y+ (Z class) or J (U class) - so you're going to be out of luck from the looks of things.

According to the QF timetable, QF5 is flown by a Boeing 747-400. As Y+ is sold on the route, that limits our options. Again, doing a search on ExpertFlyer, I can see that QF5 is currently in a 3-class configuration of J, Y+ and Y. You can view the seatmap for this configuration as a PDF.

Also just to clarify, if I book a Y+ seat and it flies as the old 2 class config will I then be sitting in J ?? Thanx DG
YMMV. If there is a late equipment change, it could go either way. This is where the computer will decide who goes where, and it's where a black-box system call Aleta kicks in (search for it by name on the forums for more info).

On the plus side, if on the chance you are downgraded then you could reasonably receive compensation for this.

I'm not sure what to suggest tune what one would or could adopt in serenading a sausage.

:p

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

More seriously, you won't have too much luck with an upgrade, especially if you're Bronze.

If you do purchase a Y+ ticket but end up with a 2-class aircraft, I believe everyone in Y+ will get a J seat? From what I remember, the 2-class aircraft sell some of the J room as Y+ seating; I can't remember when someone got a Y+ seat purchased and upon switching to a 2-class aircraft was seated in Y.

Well thankyou thewinchester! VERY FUNNY Well Ive never flown Cx but I may act like a dragon on appropriate occasion... how about you ... into firearms or a bit of a GUN yourself?;) So expertflyer says my chance of points upgrade on QF5 is zero? Do you think I should skip the upgrade option and book a Y+? And if that flight is a 3 class on the 25th, what do I get as a Y+ seat ? DG:D

Actually, it come from my days running a fast food store. One of my employees commented that I shared the demeanor of David Ogden Stiers' charachter in M*A*S*H - namely Major Charles Emerson Winchester III. Liked the idea, and thus the monkier I use online stuck.
Do you think I should skip the upgrade option and book a Y+?
If you can afford it, yes. Your body will thank you for it.

I'll have to agree that upgrade question was a sausage ! I cant see any other options to the QF5 other than getting on a slow boat!!! Thanx thewinchester I think I'll be booking the Y+ and the body will thank me.Hope its worth double $$. Has anyone flown in Y+ on QF5 ? Dragongirl - born in Year of Dragon. Chinese say very lucky :D

I flew in 744 Y+ (real thing, not a J seat) before on JNB-SYD. My ticket was actually a Y seat sold in a 2-class config, but the plane operating our flight turned out to be a 4-class 744. This means that the J ticketed pax got to sit in both F and J seats, whilst the Y ticketed pax got to sit in both Y+ and Y seats, with the better status Y pax getting the Y+ seats (but of course only Y service).

There is a few more inches of recline in a Y+ seat, plus a little bit more width. It's certainly not a J seat, not even close to a Millennium J seat (although to much chagrin quite similar to the new J being rolled out on Jetconnect 738s and newly fitted 332s on trans-continentals), but it is more comfy than a Y seat, although certainly a few people are in disagreement here.

Food is better in Y+. It's not quite J standard, but it does step up from Y. I think they also do sandwiches made to order in Y+ that you can have between meals. The bar selection (if you drink) is the same as J, including real Champagne (non-vintage, of course) instead of simply sparkling white (of which the standard drop in Y is Jacob's Creek).

Not sure what amenity kits they give you in Y+ (because I think Y just give you the plastic pencil case now rather than the older passport pouches).

Should also be quieter than the Y cabin given that there are only 32 Y+ seats. The bathrooms, however, are located behind the Y/Y+ curtain.

If you're rather tall, I think I'd recommend selecting a seat other than in the front row. The solid bulkhead in front of Y+ means slightly less leg room compared to the other seats (i.e. where you can slip your feet under the seat in front of you. When everyone's reclined, unless you are very tall it probably makes little difference (although when you are facing a seat which is fully reclined down, getting out becomes very awkward).

Of course, you could very well luck out a 2-class 744 and get a J seat for your Y+ ticket!

Thanx anat01....Im sold. Will try to work out relevant seat map. Cant face 12 hrs+ in a Y seat. Gnight DG

Mum flew QF5 the other week and got Y+ seat on a Y ticket. A 4 class 747 operated the flight, an option that seems to have been missed. Apparently the seat was much better than a Y seat.

Of course I flew it this week and it was a 3 class aircraft.
