SIN Airport Fee Increase

I like how the public are now being forced to pay for facilities before they have even been constructed.

I believe some Australian airports are trying this trick as well....

Changi is a corporatised business model but ultimately owned by either the SING govt or its Sovereign Wealth fund.

Unlike here......

Shows that in some places, Government can get it right. Changi has long been recognised as one of the world's top airlports.

Either way it has to be paid for. Less debt putting in the $$ first. It works in SING because the country essentially owns it unlike the fully privately owned ones here where prepayment of infrastructure upgrade is less believable.

I will start paying for it when I start using it. Like happens with every other thing which is not an effective monopoly...

Except perhaps for airfares, where often people pay for them 12 months in advance of using them. Or cruises where it can be even longer in advance.

That is purely the choice of the purchaser (and a completely different situation).

This charge is forced upon you, cannot be avoided (if you live in the city) and you may never use the facility that you are being charged a fee for!

Its easier without a recalcitrant Senate, and even easier in a one party government.
SING is the closest Ive seen to Aristotle's view of the most effective model of governance - Benevolent dictatorship

Government owned airports are sensible.. the Govt benefits in many other ways from increased tourism and travel (eg. Corporate taxes, employment, hotels etc).

Will be interesting to see if this impacts stopover numbers at Singapore

So what would you do? Get rid of the Senate? Always a good dictators ploy, cf Hitler...

Miss my point.

The checks and balances and non centralised power of a constitutional democracy has a downside that decision making and progress requires a plurality of votes and the pace eminently slower . Want something done quickly maybe go to benevolent dictator but then you lose the checks and balances.

My point The grass is not greener...

Closest to a benevolent dictator does not mean that it’s any good, just a bit more towards benevolent along the benevolent- murderous scale

Quite a steep increase. Going hurt if you book flights ex-SIN like I do but the time in SIN is only a transit. I'm not sure if that's covered.

Unlike here......
Sheer stupidity beyond belief how they got away with privatising our airports. Easy revenue. Now they're running around like headless chooks trying to get more tax from those already heavily taxed.

Transit is only +S$3 which is bearable.

But yikes! S$13+ for O&D flights!!!

But my flights are technically not transits if I book a BKK-SIN return followed by a SIN-BNE return. Are they going to do what HKG does and refund departure tax?
