I'm In a hotel at the moment that advertises free Internet, free minibar and free nespresso. All good things.

But what impressed me is that they have used universal power outlets by the bed and desk. This shows someone put some thought into what travelers need.

what else have people noticed in hotels that show someone was thinking about the guests?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Hotels that provide a bottle opener when you order up drinks that need them - particularly thoughtful when the rooms don't have them...

A proper little fridge sans auto charging, with mini-bar items that can be removed allowing the guest to use the fridge for their own items.
Oversized Egyptian cotton bath sheets and smaller towels for drying-off hair.
A mirror near good natural lighting.
Chocolates on the pillow at turn-down.
Can think of many others but that's a start :)

Shangri la Singapore has a smallish pool area. But they prepare your deck chair and when you are done they take away your towels etc. means there arent dozens of chairs "reserved" all day via towels being left in place. they come around with fresh watermelon on a hot day too.

Some of the things that are good to have...

Sufficient lighting. Some rooms are so dark even when all lights are on.

Rooms with a room safe that has a power point in the safe. Also a safe that is big enough for laptop.

Enough power sockets. Old rooms often seem to be lacking. Some rooms you have to unplug the alarm clock to get power near the bed.

The ability to leave power on when you leave the room. I hate those rooms that need room key to turn power on.

A bath. I do like a good soak after a hard day.

Hilton Tokyo has absolutely fabulous rooms with all the required mod cons, well thought out, designed & implemented, (especially the ample socket issue) & more with often divine views & service to match.. :D

Good quality toiletries (and I'm a bloke)

A good place to have a drink and read a book... a small library for example.

And above all, character.

I usually don't make use of room service, pool etc (spending most of my time away from the room) so the service at reception makes a lot of difference for me. At a small hotel, staff apologising that the room wasn't ready yet but, noticing my bags, proactively offering to keep them safe for me so I wouldn't have to lug them around for a couple of hours. Without my asking. It's the little things that matter.

A tap under which the kettle can easily fit to fill is also good.

Also a safe that is big enough for laptop.

+1, in particular a widescreen laptop :!:

This reminds me. One of the hotels in Australia I've used (Stamford Melbourne I think...) had a motion sensor for lights and power! God damn that was annoying.

This hotel has a key power switch but there was a card in there when we arrived and it's been left in since. Maybe they decided it just annoys people, especially in hot environments where leaving the aircon on is required.

a room large enough that you don't have to go out into the hall to change your mind....

Or even more hated is when the maid cheekily removes the duplicate or alternate card left in the power socket, anyone could hear my moments of displeasure at my required electronic items not being charged...

One more... The ability to watch tv from the bath, along with a good big bath.

Without a doubt happy staff that smile when you talk to them. The smallest room or poor location for example can be easily overlooked if the staff are pleasant and happy and give you the impression they really love their job.

And windows that open so the room can get done fresh air always help

I agree with the comments about a smile and good staff can make the stay memorable. A can do attitude goes a long way.

I like
*a magnifying mirror with lights, helpful with doing hair and makeup when the lighting is usually poor
*good quality tea bags
*a room service menu with decent selection from 11pm-6am
*good quality toiletries

A good Hot Breakfast selection
Decent sized rooms
Clean rooms
A proper shower..no combined bath/shower.
Enough Power outlets
Mini bars that can be used for your own storage.

Real milk for the morning coffee! Also decent size coffee cups. I hate the "two sips" and it's empty sort.

I hate hotels where the staff keep coming in to the room constantly, one to do the bed followed half an hour later by someone for the mini bar, a bit later someone will come and do the bathroom etc. I much prefer when one person (or a group) come and do everything in one go. Very annoying being in the room and being interrupted non-stop (Yes I know I could use the Do Not Disturb, but why? I'm happy to be disturbed, just not constantly!).

Also hotels which start their housekeeping early and have vacuuming going early. Even 8-9am is too early to start in my books.

Also think hotels should be less stingy on bottled water.

The ability to leave power on when you leave the room. I hate those rooms that need room key to turn power on.

In many cases this can be overcome by putting a business card or something in the slot, it is simply a switch and not a reader.
