SYD-MEL this morning, wanted to get straight into a taxi when I arrived so took my wheely bag through security as hand baggage.

The security lady at SYD very politely confiscated my can of shaving foam as it didn't have a top on it.

Is this new policy? I'm puzzled - what possible security hazard could the lack of a flimsy plastic top constitute? I always pack liquids and gels in a plastic bag in case anything leaks into my laptop, so that can't be it.

This policy, although uniformly followed, has been around for quite a while. Any aerosol needs to have the top to it

Indeed, it's been enforced for several years (if the screener sees it). I don't think it's been published anywhere though (that I've seen!)

I presume it's because of the threat of the button accidentally getting jammed/pushed while onboard the flight and the consequent release of the contents of the aerosol.

Shave before hand or get use to the rugged look. Woof

Sorry feeling silly:oops:

Not as silly as me. Bought a tube of fancy shaving cream today for $10 - hope that doesn't get confiscated.

Thanks to all for the clarification.

The plastic top stops the aerosol discharging everywhere should you hit turbulence and the top of the aerosol is pressed.

I don't know how good the scanners are at picking up aerosol, I once "lost" a can in my bag (I don't know where it hid), neither CBR or SYD could find it (I told them I think there is one in there but I couldn't find it, it turns out neither could they) and it "reappeared" in my bag that evening back in CBR.

Cans of Rexona (with the locking top) also seem to be OK, but YMMV.

I travel domestically with the lynx spray-can twist-top containers and they're fine.

The totally stupid part is that you can just as easily throw the lid of a normal aerosol out once through security. It's quite easy to use one, say after using a shower in the QP, and then forget to re-cap, negating any screening the security point has done.

I see the reason they do it, but it's a pointless one IMHO.

I think it was prompted by a DJ flight a few years ago (possibly to or from BNE?) where just that happened, and the smell in the cabin caused some alarm.

Aren't all your flights disrupted when all the amorous females on board throw themselves at your feet?

Yeah it's very distracting. Perhaps I should change to a different brands roll on to avoid this (And the need to worry about the cap, of course ;))
