We have international business class flights booked from Sydney to Santiago. I would prefer to fly from Canberra than drive to Sydney.

I am confident Qantas will check us through without any problems but am wondering about whether they will extend the SCL flight's luggage allowances? I was planning to take 3 cases between the two of us.

The international allowance of 2 pieces per person applies. Just ensure that each piece doesn't exceed 23 kilos per bag to avoid the heavy fee unless you're ff silver or above in which case the bags can be up to 32 kg.

Interestingly I booked CBR - LHR in business via MEL.

Our company travel policy is that we are supposed to do domestic legs in economy. Once informed I rang Qantas to see what would be involved in changing the fare type. The answer was it would cost me $800 more!

Did you get a price flying from CBR?

I am booking for a personal trip and have no status level. I believe the inclusive ticket price CBR-SCL was about $700 more. The suitably timed flights to/from CBR didn't offer BC seating and so I figured it wasn't worth it. Now, naturally I don't want to drive to SYD and have the international checkin hassles. Current economy is about $170. I looked online about changing our existing ticket and as you found, it was $400 per change.

I will just have to pack wisely across the two suitcases. I forgot that the economy international allowance to SCL was 2x23kg if I end up booking the domestic leg.

Why don't you book them separately but in the same PNR to avoid the baggage hassles? You get the fare saving, and guaranteed through check.

Sorry to sound stupid. Newbie at this. Howe do I do that?

You just go to wherever you booked the international flight and get them to add in another flight. If it was Qantas online, then you'll need to give them a ring. Online bookings have made people think things need to be separate, but they can be easily in the same PNR.
