Booking a couple of flights using points the last leg in a ATR. The system wanted extra points for row 1 emergency exit. I am sure as a platinum I can ring up and get row 1 for no extra but is it worth the hassle? Am I better to book into the last row to be first off?
I haven't flown any sectors on an ATR. Seat guru gives a thumbs up to row 1 and thumbs down for row 17 due to proximity to the lav.
Any comments appreciated.

As always it's a personal preference, but I find the seats on the AT7s are universally sucky. I used to try getting as close to the pointy end as possible, but my preference now is to get outta dodge as quick as possible. The lavs must be a standard line on seat guru because I doubt you'd hear the dunny over the donks. FWIW, I usually go for about row 15... But with the limited overhead space it is also well worth excercising your priority boarding because up the back your competing not just with other pax, but also cabin crew for space in the overheads.

Wise words hombre.

There's only one thing better than getting outta Dodge quickly.........staying clear of Dodge in the first place!

The best seat in an ATR is in the lounge!

(So I can't be accused of OT, on the few misadventures I've had aboard the flying school bus, I suffered in what I've been advised are the best of a bad bunch...row 17).

In my view is not worth it, but only a small plane so no real delays!

I usually go row 17 as the AC boards from rear. Can be last on and first off, and every minute counts on those pencils of doom.

Seat guru often say this for the last row, regardless of the plane. The other thing they always seem to do is warn of limited/no recline in the last row. Those who have flown on the Dash 8s will know why "limited recline" might not be relevant to Row 19 on a QLink Q400... :p

I fly the ATRs a bit Sydney to Canberra return. The lounge always puts me up the back. Overhead is bad. If my carry on is a bit large they take it separately as I am about to get on the plane.

Not my favourite this plane. Less jets flying this route now though.

Fly the VA (ex-Skywest) ATR regularly. Being Plat they will always try to seat you at the back (I believe their systems allocate this automatically) but I choose Row 1. Much more legroom and just feels less hectic. Board last and you're fine, just be prepared to stay seated for 2 or 3 more minutes after landing while everyone else gets off. It's definitely not ideal but it's nice to have no through-traffic to the bathrooms when in Row 1. Also, no one tries to snake your overhead bin in Row 1 on the ATR!
Even if you select and pay for Row 1 the system may move you to the back once OLCI opens. Keep an eye on this.

I love row 1 on the ATRs.

One of the only times I do not care about getting off quickly. The other time is row 80 on a QF A380, ;)

The ATRs have huge issues with snakes......if a seagull farts nearby during takeoff, they snake all the way up the runway like a wino off to chat to the big white porcelain telephone!

Have I ever mentioned, I don't really gell with the ATRs?

But refuse to fly an A320 with JQ? Isn't the world a funny quirky place to reside.

I have flown on a A320 with A3, TT, FD, PG and possibly a few others.

I refuse to fly JQ on principle as it was created by Qantas to confuse it's loyal frequent flyers.

In a way I regret my decision. I saw some gorgeous FAs this morning in MEL wearing black and ochre. Shame they are working for JQ....

Work flew me up to BDB once, was in an ATR.... Managed to snag Row 1 at the airport while checking-in.... Enjoyed the extra leg room, but didn't realize that yes indeed, you boarded from the rear...

Now I know - If I can't get Row 1, as far back possible of the bus it is for me...

So why are VA running these planes SYD - CBR? Is the market there to to get rid of these planes on this sector?

Although i haven't been on one from this thread sounds like I don't need to. I'll stick to the Dash8s which I quite like for regional.

They are an absolute cash cow on that route and kill the competition in the economics, anything 300nm or less they shine while the speed advantage of the Q400 is negated. In terms of fuel ATR says it is 40% more fuel efficient then the q400 on 300NM sectors and 20% overall cheaper to operate.

The only good thing I can say about the AT7 is that at least it's not a crash8. Personally, I won't be happy until they bring back the jungle jets.

Couldn't agree more. I wonder what the weight savings would be if they took all of those concrete seats out of the flying school bus! Don't try to tell me they aren't made of concrete as they sure feel that way ;)

To the OP - my vote would be anywhere in Row 15-17, I think weight and balance puts a bias towards passengers in the front/middle of the bus, so make of that what you will as to the benefits of being further down the back.
