I do FIFO work so I fly a lot with Qantas and I'm currently silver frequent flyer. I have noticed though when I choose my seats I haven't got the same selection other people have that are silver and I seem to always get this "individual seat selection isn't available in this flight" message when I try look at the seat selection after doing it once. Does any one know why this is?

My flights aren't automatically linked to my app, I am given a reference number and in put it myself not sure if this is the reason why.

You are most likely part of a group booking. You cannot do seat selection online on group bookings I believe. Or, you are on QantasLink flights that are on Dash 8 aircraft. You can't pick seats on those for weight distribution reasons.

If I fly on QantasLink I often find seat selection is not available. I can usually pick aisle or window though.

I believe also can’t select seats apart from Aisle or Window if flying on a turboprop.
(But you can on Rex - extra legroom)

It’s a weight distribution issue.

Not the same issue, but I've noticed when flying with friends and colleagues on separate bookings, our seat selection maps for the same flight look completely different and show different availability, meaning we often can't choose seats next to each other.

They're always able to fix this at the airport for us, and then sometimes our bookings/seats even become linked as I can view and change their seats from my app as if we had booked together.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If what you are referring to is when trying to OLCI, then it's "notional" or "theoretical" seating.

On any given flight, Qantas rates eavery passenger/booking differently and seat availability can vary relation to those ratings.
