He's not fit in body and spirit. Not chosen in swimming squad and now humiliated himself outside of pool.

I cut the guy some slack (not going to debate the details!!). He brought great enjoyment and pride to the nation in his prime and I'm grateful for that. I can't imagine the dedication required to make his recent 'come back' . I contemplate my corpulent self and think 'good on you'.

The stilnox thing - something acquired in the 'service' to the country, and he's not an orphan in regards to the consequences of an addiction.

And, more to the point, sticking it to a recliner, he can't be all bad  :) .

What I have to say about him isn't suitable to put here.
This article sums it up.
What No One Wants To Mention

Here's another if that one wasn't sufficiently clear
Why I Wasn't Cheering for Grant Hackett

With respect to the seat reclining, no it probably wasn't necessary on an ADL-MEL flight.
Grant Hackett's response however demonstrated the true measure of the man.

Grant Hackett detained at Melbourne Airport 'after Virgin Australia flight altercation' | Daily Mail Online

" 'He tweaked my nipple': Grant Hackett delivered to police in a WHEELCHAIR reeking of booze after 'sexually assaulting' fellow business class passenger who reclined his seat on a Virgin flight"

Haven't laughed so hard for years.

Regardless of the seat belonging to the recliner (and doing what they like with it), they are such pesky types, especially on shortish flights. I don't mind the "small" recline, but that full-on recline is the pits, especially during the meal .....

There'll be many who would like to get away with dumping on the recliner.

Can't say I have any time for people who recline on short day flights...

From the Virgin Australia website - domestic business class:

737 Business Class seat features include:

  • Luxury leather
  • Generous recline
  • 38 inch (96.5 cm) seat pitch

Whereas for economy:

[h=3]Seating[/h]
  • Luxury leather
  • Up to 31 inch (75 cm) seat pitch
  • Over 17 inch (43 cm) seat width

So 'generous recline' is clearly advertised as a specific feature for business class. If you don't like it take the front row or fly another airline.

This! Well said PF.

I was thinking along similar lines watching the footy the other night and noticed Wayne Carey is back. I don't care how much someone has achieved on the sporting field and how dedicated that must have been, they should never be back in the public spotlight after raising their hand to a woman (or anyone for that matter).

It's not just about reclining it's about consideration for others around you.

Had a couple on a SYD-CBR flight on VA recline back in unison. On a 25 minute flight? Seriously? Gave them a spray and moved seats.

Feel sorry for Grant Hackett. Obviously demons at play that we could not possibly understand.

If there is a feature then it can be used as paid for!
If you pay for my seat then I would not recline on request...... Otherwise accept you maybe reclined on any length of flight at any time...... Oh and I have endured many a rear seat recline..... I mean the seat in front of exit row does not recline and the last seats on plane do not recline......
Concerning Hackett or anyone..... You lay a forceful hand on me, witnessed by passengers and crew that's assault!
What's his consequence..... Oh sorry, oh sorry, oh sorry..... Should be given a pick and an orange jump suit to bloody clean the side of roads for 6 months at least!

Apparently Hackett was wasted and couldn't even walk properly, surprised they let him on board. Being that drunk it's the FA's obligation to deny him entry to the aircraft.

The Swim Australia response speaks volumes that their culture hasn't changed. Their rep said that nothing happened and in fact that he had slept most of the flight. The complexity of another person's assault and the fact the sleep was because he was blind drunk seems to have escaped him. Guess all were lucky he didn't vomit.

Was a video on the news tonight of Gary Pert literally carrying him off the plane - mustn't have been in a good state on boarding

I agree Daver6 pretty awful stuff.
If the AOC still think that Grant Hackett is worthy of mentoring our young swimmers in Rio they should be prepared for some seriously hard questions, not least from the parents of the younger swimmers (male and female) attending.

He clearly seems to have issues with alcohol, prescription drugs etc. But there is no excuse at all for assaulting someone. Seat recliner or not.
He may have been a legend at one point, he's now a disgrace.

Wow!! I haven't seen any media today but that's astounding. :(

I have marginally less time for buffoons and those who are/get wasted on planes than I have for recliners, but would people mind if we take the usual bucket load of salt with what's fed to us by the esteemed media pack? For instance: when you have direct knowledge of an event, how does it compare with what you see in the paper/on television?

I agree with you RooFlyer. I think we publicly only know what the media is reporting about this specific incident .
In fact we have Grant's travelling companion stating that nothing happened, reported by the media.

Is that the Collingwood guy, sitting behind Hackett, not travelling with him? :) Said in interview I saw tonight that Hackett was wasted, couldn't walk off the plane unaided, but didn't see any 'assault' the guy in front.

I dunno.
