OK I know it some where in here but starting new one :)

Yesterday QF751 SG (can't judge actual status by tags) tag on bag put bag on 1D to organize his stuff in a rushed way - grabs bag to go into overhead locker - not over 1D area which was empty but down to 3C locker space then sits in row 4.

At this point only about 3 J pax with rest loading no space left FA's trying their best to refit bags.

Question: To advise FA of SG bag or not?

Have been on a flight or two where FA's have asked what the J pax what their bags look like to remove non J bags out.

Which row 4 seat? How many were in row 4 already? In general, I've decided my bag is my problem, other bags are not. But overhead usage does frustrate me greatly, just I try to keep out of it.

Good idea to collect data points on this. You are right - it has been discussed in many other topics but usually as an existing topic veers wildly off-topic!

From my recollection in the Australian domestic scene - most posters reported more non-business luggage in J overhead bins happening in QF rather that DJ/VA although this may be different now. I recall seeing from various posters reports of VA often leaving the J bins in the closed position upon boarding to discourage this practice by passengers, whereas QF may not do this at all, or may not do it consistently. That's my recollection of it anyway.

Some other factors would also come into play besides the airline, like was priority boarding used and successful, aircraft type B737/B767/A330 and overhead bin space etc? passenger loads in Y and J cabins and whether the airline had a free baggage allowance or checked baggage fees at the time.

He was either 4 A, B or C. Not many people in that row D - F that I could see, it was early part of loading pax and he had no intentions of seeing if there was any space in Y - his view as I judged it was I'll sort myself out here in row 1 despoit my bag in J and just go past the divider and take my seat.

Yes agree with you about not advising FA and that's why now I try to board as early as possible in J.

Being a long term row 4 passenger. I only asked the question because 4ABE and F all have good usable space under the seat in front. The aisle seats don't also if he was one of the first to row 4 the mini bin would have been available. So no need to take the J space.

I also board early to get the mini overhead. I only recall one passenger doing what you mentioned. But I have seen a number if rows 5 to 7 quickly take J space and keep walking.

in the USA you can report it as a security risk and has pretty quick results in getting the bag moved to be with the passenger :) Don't know how that would work in AU?

Sep last year flew Delta from LAX to JFK return - both ways was sitting in emergency exit row seat directly behind business class .. Both times no overhead locker space and both times the flight attendant put my bag in business class overhead locker!
