I never know if this is the right place to post this, if not please feel free to move it Mr. Mod.

I’m looking at a RTW ticket in First Class for Myself and She who must be obeyed, in March 2014. I have looked at somepast posts but most are out of date, so if any one has a suggestion please let me know.

I have status with both Star Alliance and One World, so I'm happy to look at either.

Without trawling through online TA sites etc., these are the current base prices for an AONE4 (oneworld RTW 4 continents) from several starting points. I have compared Star Alliance business class RTWs with oneworld in the past and have found them (*A that is) more expensive, guessing this may carry over to F). AONE4 fares may not be the cheapest you can get, but they would certainly be among the least restrictive in terms of routing and stopovers.You will need to add taxes/surcharges. Prices in AUD.

Ex Australia: 17,399
Ex New Zealand: 14,644
Ex South Africa: 8,172

I don't think they come much cheaper than South Africa (there used to be cheaper from Khartoum but I don't think it exists any more, and TBH, going to KRT is not high on my wish list).

Of course, if you wish to commence the AONE4 in NZ or SA there is the small matter of getting there and back, but you may have some points to use for that if desired.

There is also a rule attached to these fares to theoretically prevent one from taking advantage of cheaper fares in another country, but most report (including me), being able to get around it albeit sometimes needing a little persistence to do so.

The other thing with F RTWs is to try and ensure you are able to get F! Many routes that used to have it now only have Y/J available, but that is all part of the planning.

There are a number of posts/threads about commencing these trips in NZ or SA.

Sorry to reopen the thread buy how did you get fairs from another country? Recently did a Circle Pacific ex HKG but I had to get there first - any hints on not needing to do that? .

You will always have to do a positioning flight - but you're best advised to find a travel agent in that country to transact through. HKG is a unique place in that Canadian agents are for some reason about to issue tickets originating in HKG too.

I haven't delved into much as yet, but I work for a US based company which must route our Australian office web connection back via Chicago and when ever I visit an airline site it always defaults to the US version of the web site, even when I set to Aus the next time I log into it defaults back to the US.

The only thing is I don't think the US is that much cheaper than Aus fares.....so far anyway.

I think it is as Isochronous says...if you purchase a fare ex-<country name>, then you must commence (and complete, though you could potentially 'throw away' the last segment of your trip to get around that) the trip in that country.
