Hoping someone here can help me out, I recently attained Gold status and have a few more bookings coming up that I have eStandby upgrade requests in for. I'm relatively happy with the rooms I have booked however an upgrade would be nice. Do gold members often get good upgrades? And do you have to ask for them? (I'm new to semi-elite hotel status and I've never asked for upgrades before). And also should I cancel my eStandby requests?

One other question on gold upgrades is does the room rate booked have any influence over the upgrade? Like one night I have a best available rate and another I have one of the advance purchase rates from the current promotion.

Thanks for any help, it's always good to see the more seasoned travellers here to help.

If you have estandby upgrades, normally they are granted and often to the higher level of the box you ticked (if you ticked them all). As Gold for the past 18 months, I have had an excellent run with free upgrades, however I have also stayed at Hilton's many times over the last year, with also many paid bookings for future travel (which I'm guessing may help). It also depends on which properties you're trying at...some Hilton's are good with upgrades, others with Gold's are not.

Another approach may be to cancel your estandby upgrade requests and see if you get a gold status upgrade that you are happy with. If you don't, ask if you can have an estandby upgrade (or discounted paid upgrade direct with the hotel). There has been reports here on AFF of that being successful but the problem I've experienced with the estandby upgrades is that they will over ride your complementary upgrade, effective getting you to pay for something you would have got anyway, so my moto now is no estandby upgrade requests unless the hotel advertises that they don't offer complementary upgrades.

If you do a search, you will find discussions about this, but the estandby upgrades here on AFF are usually referred to as Nor1 upgrades so do that search as well.

Its like the old saying "Always prepare to travel in the cabin you've booked"
I've long since given up on reliable room upgrades even at Diamond level. I usually book the room category I want to stay in, anything else is a bonus ;)

There is a wealth of information about upgrade successes (or otherwise) at different hotels in this thread: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....emium-club/how-do-hilton-treat-you-18502.html. Start at the end (for most recent information) and work your way back. Just take particular note of whether the poster is Gold or Diamond status.

Generally, Asian properties are really generous with gold upgrades, other areas can be mixed (including Australia and US).

Thanks for all the help. It has definitely given me something to think about and some further reading to do. I might try my luck, the upgrade that would have me 100% satisfied is only really the next category up so I may get lucky with it.

Again thanks for the assistance! I may also book some of the future stays I know I will have with the, as well.

The only other question I have is do prepaid rates make you less likely to get an upgrade?

No not at all. If you see a good sale rate, grab it as then if you choose the paid upgrade, you can get a fantastic suite at very little cost

I have always had sucess by emailing the hotel and asking what there policy is. The only occasion when that hasnt worked was at the Hilton Sydney where they were very apologetic.
