Thinking of going to L.A. in a couple of weeks.
No business or premium economy reward seats
Business tickets are unusual expensive, does this translate into unlikely upgrades ?
Also taking into account just purchasing the tickets be it premium or business would I be unlikely to get the next upgrade ?
I am Platinium status

LAX routes seem to be very difficult for getting upgrades. I've tried a couple of times in the past and no luck (on paid economy and premium economy fares but only with gold status).

Are you travelling during the school holidays? Could make it even harder.

Just looked and I am looking at leaving the week school end in NSW. Returning in 1st week of school.holidays. This would be only a 5 or 6 day trip

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As a platinum, you could try call QFF and ask whether they're able to release award availability in either J or Y+. I'm not sure how much luck you will have given how soon the dates are, but it's worth a try.

Y+ on QF12 LAX-SYD on either 17th April (744) or 18th April (A380) seems to have decent availability.

J fares close in will be up there regardless of actual booked loads (unless only full J available of course). It's rare to find aa sale or discount seat close in given the yield they would want to extract from people with such a "need" (ie: last minute business trips).

Chances of upgrade can vary very much with midweek departures *usually* considered more likely, but it all depends on specific flights and what their lods are, other upgrade requests and all the usual stuff.

I agree to call QF and request a seat be opened if there's any leeway. Prepare to be flexible at this lage stage you might need to consider options rather than more direct flights (eg: BNE-LAX seems to generally be less loaded while it's a 747).

Also consider asking for an F seat to be opened as it's possible there's more inventory there (for QF 11/93/12/94)
