HI'
I am travelling
perth - toronto, 8th april, via honkong (3 hour stopover) with cathay pacific.
Chances are I will end up buying 2 (my daughter and myself) fully paid 'N' tickets, perth - toronto 8th april, toronto ny or la 24 august, ny or la perth 29 august. Roughly $2200 each. All Cathay Pacific.
I can accrue Qantas FF points on these flights but I cannot use them to upgrade.
I can't find any Qantas award flights home that will work for us.
Is it worth joining Asia miles and would I acruue enough on the forward journey to upgrade on the return journey?
Forward journey is defintely economy travelling with other passengers, return journey I would love to travel business but cost is too much.

Would it be worth joining CAthay or another program?

I use mostly a Visa AMEX FF card from ANZ. I doubt I would qualify for any new credit cards.

Thanks in advance, love this site!

You would need to have the points credit quickly. And then be able to book an award flight close to departure date.

I would just earn on QF and add them to the kitty for redeeming down the track. YMMV.

If the tickets are in "N" class you won't be able to earn Qantas FF points on them (or before others suggest it, earn AAadvantage points either). Your only option for earning, I think, would be to join Asia Miles. Even then the points you earn is not going to be very much, 25% of miles flown (ie. just under 3000 Asia Miles), nowhere near enough for any sort of redemption.

I don't think you are going to have enough points at all to upgrade....BUT it would still be worth joining Asia Miles IMO. You never know when the points might come in handy. Don't know what QF status you are...but if you don't have business class lounge access, CX business class lounge access can be purchased with 12k in points and is a most welcome relief if travelling long haul economy. Their HK lounges are the GREAT.

BA Avios would be the best choice I thought.N accrue 25% in BA,the same as CX itself, about 10k in return for 2 tickets.BA's short haul redemption rate is the best ,only 9k Y in routes like SFO-LAX,HKG-TPE,YYZ-JFK.Another interesting fact is that O class of CX cannot get Asiamiles but 25% in avios. If you travel often with cx,you can buy V next time, about $100 more but you get 100% accrual in Asiamiles.54k AM worth MEL/PER-HKG premium eco round trip,or 80k biz round. You can also status match Marco Polo Club silver (one world ruby)with any other elite status like virgin silver or QF silver and $50 entry fee to MPC will be waived, CX treats their own elites very well. You get unlimited CX lounge access,10kg extra checked and in cabin baggage, priority boarding & check in etc.Even the green card(entry level) get priority boarding and check in!i base in china and not good at English.
