I booked a number of flights earlier in the week and noticed that the CC surcharge has been reduced on VA bookings from 1.30% to 0.996% for both domestic and international bookings.

Over on the Rat, I note that they have cut their CC surcharge as well, but only down to 1.01%. SQ are still at (or has gone up to) 1.35%.

A very small win for the travelling public...

I noticed this as well, happened in the last 2-3 days. Welcome news.

Businesses have to charge what it costs them so we are at 1.0% for Visa and MasterCard and 1.5% for Amex.
The rates charged sometimes seem too high so I am guessing some businesses are ignoring the law change.
Always good to get a reduction from airlines.

You must have a better deal with credit card providers than Thrifty then, with better credit card rates. They charge 0.7% for V/MC debit, 1.1% for V/MC credit and 3.75% for Amex.

Also I was under the misapprehension that businesses had to offer a surcharge free option - but some companies don’t and only allow payment with a surcharged method.

I also thought a fee free method had to be provided. But I suppose not.

VA for example if you partial pay with a gift voucher you have to pay the balance via debit or credit card with the requisite (now slightly reduced) surcharges.

I noticed quite a few smaller businesses deal directly with customers are now saying that they do not accept cash. It’s understandable in cases of security and it also takes time to process and bank etc.

While I conceded it is understandable, why should the consumer cop a fee because the business wishes not to accept a cost of doing business?

We are wholesalers so we really never see cash. It is a problem for retailers and those who deal with the public.
$100 on a card costs $1 and banking cash might waste us ten or more times that.
Amex lowered their fees so that Thrifty rate is probably BS.

Perhaps the mistake is in a business saying that they are going to add 1% or whatever instead of just adjusting prices accordingly.

Agree. This whole CC fee bit should be inclusive in the price. It's simply an overhead these days. Imagine the ridicule if a business offered a price of $x +0.2% for staff coffee, 0.15% for stationary, 0.2% for vehicle maintenance, 0.3% for workers comp. oh and 1.1% for CC etc etc
It's a total crock which has been allowed to fester from the days CC's were first introduced and needs to stop IMHO.

I feel that hotels should be able to price their rooms inclusive of credit card fees for retail customers. I can see why those on corporate pricing would possibly need to have a surcharge.

Businesses should be adjusting their prices not adding surcharges. How they continue to get away with it is a mystery.
