Hello everyone,

I have a few questions regarding the Redemption Nominees feature of Singapore KrisFlyer and hope that someone can help clarify how it all works :) I had a read online and am still quite confused. I will list out the questions below...

1. From my understanding, if Son is nominated on Dad's Krisflyer account, then Dad can use his points to purchase a flight for Son - would I be correct in saying this?

2. Can Son purchase his own flights and have Dad use his points to upgrade Son's flights from economy > premium economy/business? If not, can Dad purchase economy tickets for Son then upgrade him to business with his points?

Essentially, my dad has a few hundred thousand credit card award points that he does not need which can be converted to Velocity/Singapore/Etihad FF (and a few others) and I am a Gold Velocity member. I fly quite often and was thinking of using those points to upgrade myself from economy > business on flights that I purchase (I usually fly Singapore when travelling internationally/Virgin domestically). Is there any way I could get the points onto my own account or even just any way I could make use of those points?

The only other alternative I can think of is transferring his points to a Velocity account under his name then transfer the balance of his account to mine (family member) which I believe you can do once a year then convert them to KrisFlyer Miles at the rate of 1.35 per 1 point. Does this theoretically work?

Apologies for the confusing questions but if someone could help me clarify how the redemption nominees feature works and let me know of any better alternatives then that would be great!

Thanks in advance :)

1. Correct

2. No, and No ( Once Dad purchased ticket for Son, the ticket will have Son's name on it ), Son have KF member, but do not have KF miles, therefore can not upgrade. You cant use Dad KF miles to upgrade. It must be same ticket name, same KF accounts.

You can do the transfer, but each transfer will cost you a lot. Imagine your Dad has 100,000 SQ miles, transfer to velocity becomes 74074. then He transfer to your velocity, later you convert to your own KF, you will have 54869 left ( nearly 50% gone ) not worth it !

Isn't points transfer for family members free? What points loss are you talking about?

KF doesn't allow family transfer so doing via Velocity creates a loss.

KF -> VA -> VA2 -> KF2 means two transfers at 1.35:1. Of course if transferring from CC to velocity, then family transfer then to KF there is only 1 transfer at 1.35:1

thank you everyone for your help! I think i will transfer from his CC to velocity, family transfer to myself (once a year) then transfer it to KF at a loss of 1.35 ~ This feels like the best option for me :)

If you are not concerned with upgrade and just go for a redemption. Your dad could join KF and have you as a nominee and just book the redemption in your name.( As you mentioned above). I only say this if your points destination is going to be KF.

I guess you could transfer the exact credit card points to KF for a redemption flight in full. ( leaving you zero KF points in your dads account after the flight ). Then transfer remaining credit card points to VA

This sounds like a smart idea as well! how much would you look at for upgrading to business from an economy reward flight?

No. Not upgrading from economy to business. I mean simply book a business redemption flight.

I will make some assumptions to make my point :

Dad has 200,000 credit card points that transfer at 1 : 1 to KF

Dad joins KF with Son a nominee

A business SYD to LAX booked online on SQ is 85000 points each way = 170,000 points

I would transfer only 170,000 credit card points to KF and book the return business flight

I would transfer remaining 30,000 credit card points to velocity for you to use domestically or whatever or simply let them accrue with the credit card compnay and do the same at a later time.

I actually thought that KF members can use their points to upgrade nominees in their account (who are of course travelling in a fare class eligible for upgrade), although possibly not online - would require call to Krisflyer Member Services.

That's my understanding of how it works. I've certainly booked redemptions for my nominees cant see why I couldn't also upgrade them.
