I'm planning on travel in June to the East coast, and I see QF 11 is A388 SYD-LAX then down-gauges to 744 LAX-JFK on the same flight number.

I'm thinking of an upgrade request from J -> F, but wonder if the lack of F on the second leg would be a problem with the trans-pacific upgrade?
Any recent experiences?
Thanks.

There is no F on the 744.
I suspect that it will just be a J seat on that lax to JFK leg
or you have to go to AA who has first.

But I haven't been in F so can't say for sure

you can request an upgrade on the second sector - that's how it appeared for a friend of mine doing the same route... it lists all four flights separately SYD-LAX, LAX-JFK and the same for the return. The 'upgrade' button only appears beside the eligible flights (ie those with F SYD-LAX).

You can't use QF points to upgrade on AA flights (even if booked as a QF codeshare flight) as points upgrade flights have to be on QF metal.

Has anybody had recent experience with this? I'm booked on QF11 Syd to JFK in September and am unable to place an upgrade request for the Syd-Lax leg online. I tried the QFFF Plat line and they advised they weren't able to lodge a request due to no F on the LAX-JFK leg (B744). I would've thought that I could still put a upgrade request in for the sector on the A388 though…?

Sounds bizarre HUACA I think

It can certainly be done over the phone. I have an upgrade request in for qf11 in December this year for just the Syd-lax sector.

Didnt the OP say they contacted the platinum line who said they couldnt do it. Perhaps its up to the call centre agent who answers the phone. Could be hit or miss depending on who you get.

The agent I spoke to had to confirm exactly what to do but had no issues doing it. And it's showing as 'upgrade requested' in my booking.

There's also issues with seat selection on this route too due to change of aircraft. I have two bookings on qf11 coming up in the next few months. One in J other in PE. In both cases I had to call for seating. But with PE booking I could request upgrade though to JFK. I had to call regarding J booking but it all seemed to work fine. (Calling platinum line each time). I think it's certainly hit or miss.

As stark mentions above, there is indeed issues trying to select seats on QF11 due to the aircraft changes. I've had to call again to rectify my selections. I also have now asked 3 separate Plat line reps if they can put an upgrade request in for the Syd-Lax sector, all 3 have advised they are unable to do so. If it's indeed hit and miss, I keep missing!!!

I'd keep trying. But then mine could be an anomaly and I have no real chance of my upgrade coming through :)

Hmm so I've called about 5 or 6 different times over the past week to try and find a rep who knew how to put the upgrade request in for the SYD-LAX leg all to no avail. I guess I'll just have to resign myself to slumming it in J ha.

Today I had to change a flight I had booked for Jan 16 originally to LAX to continue on to JFK - I was originally on QF 11 SYD-LAX and now I'm QF11 SYD-JFK, only afterwards did I realise I could no longer request an upgrade to F online..

After reading this thread I rang the QFF platinum line to ask about the upgrade which did seem to confuse the operator a little.. Eventually she said that I could apply for an upgrade but it would be 60,000pts each (instead of the 45,000 to upgrade SYD-LAX) despite the fact the LAX-JFK leg doesn't have F anyway.

She said she would enter the upgrade, however after hanging up she rang me back 2 minutes later to tell me that there was no F on QF11 at all. I told her that the SYD-LAX was an A380, to which she said 'oh yes, you're right..'.

Bottom line is my profile now states that an upgrade is requested, although it doesn't actually say to F and says '-1 points' but it seems it will cost 120,000pts for 2 of us.

Mrs Chooms and I have a trip BNE-SYD-LAX-JFK-LAX-BNE in J booked for Dec.

Rang up QF Premium to request upgrade on SYD-JFK leg of QF11 and arranged it over the phone - worked first time so worth pursuing!

I have the same indication of "-1" points in the upgrade request page:

It also says the upgrade is 'requested on the trip page:

I also put in my requests for seats on the two legs of QF11 during the same phone call (cannot do this online), however EF and the flight page on the QF website aren't showing the selected seats (the seats of EF remain vacant for some reason).

Any way I can verify the seats are in the system?

Hmmm I'm not sure if I should bother calling yet again about this. It seems it all depends on who you speak to. My flight is in three weeks and even if they do manage to lodge the request I will be further back in the queue. When I first called (multiple times) back in July the business cabin was only about ten percent full. Now it's over 60% and emerald city has only three unallocated seats so my request is unlikely be successful now anyway. It's a bit annoying that this is a recurring problem and not many plat line agents know how to process. There are bigger problems in the world though so I think I'll just forget it.

When are you flying Orca? I'm on QF 11 (not continuing on to JFK though) on September 29th with an upgrade request from J to F. Hopefully we're not on the same flight so as to increase my chances of getting an upgrade :p

You're in luck emeline... I fly out on Mon 28th !

Well that's lucky! Or we may well have been stuck in J together :p

Hope you manage to get your request in (and that it's successful!)

As long as it's in emerald city then that's fine by me ha! Good luck :)

I only booked a week or so ago, nothing in emerald city so I'm in 21K over but am in 13K on the way back :D
