Hi guys, 1st post for me.Couple of questions..

I can have a seat near the wing row 59 in a Qantas 380.Is it quieter further back and am I better off further behind the engines?

Also are there any exit row or headboard seats that have lift-up arm-rests on 380s & 747-400s?
Lastly can anyone confirm if the QF380 upper econ level 2x2 seat has a lift up center armrest?
The fixed armrests are a devil for us bigger guys [and gals I guess]

thanks great site info here! Dave

Hi 6pakdave and welcome to AFF. If you need to lift up the arm rest to fit into the seat then you won't be allowed to remain in the exit row.

You might be better up the back of whY in the hope of getting a spare seat beside you.

Row 32 upstairs does have lift up arm rests for the window seats, from memory the middle seats dont as they have TVs in the seat.

Its also likely your seat neighbour (if you have one) may not appreciate the arm rest being up....

I'm inclined to agree with this... But what I'm about to say, I want to say with the greatest amount of respect...

I certainly do not want to make any value judgements about your size (it sounds like you carry a lot of weight, and this is the issue). And I don't want to discourage you from flying.

If your girth is such that you would have difficulty fitting in one seat, and need extra room to push into the seat beside you, you really should book a "comfort seat" - or upgrade your seat to a seat class that will suit your body better - Premium Economy, Business or First.

Comfort seats give you access to two seats for your trip. This will solve your armrest issues. I believe comfort seats can be booked via the call centre.

Getting a centre seat sucks at the best of times. But it would suck heaps more if the person sitting next to you could only sit comfortably while encroaching onto your space.

Again, I'm not trying to discourage you from flying, or make a value judgement about your size.

But it is inconsiderate for anyone to book and pay for 1 seat - expect 1.05, 1.1, 1.2 or more of a seat just to make themselves more comfortable, potentially at the discomfort of others. And if someone's girth is such that the armrest digs in and makes it uncomfortable to sit in a seat, then realistically this will be the case.

So, with the greatest amount of respect, if you're travelling solo (without a partner who will take that centre seat, and doesn't mind snuggling up close to you), please book a comfort seat.

This is the right (considerate/fair) thing to do in your circumstance - certainly it's the solution that has been designed for people in your dilemma.

I've never heard of this comfort seat concept, I am 6ft9in tall and around 180kg, and I always book Business or First (have made platinum with personal flying only), cos economy is just hell. Even being in an exit row, i get the trolley bashing into my shoulder every time they come past, left a solid bruise last time I flew, (not to mention it was a horrible flight for the guy sitting next to me (who was also fairly large).

+1

I've travelled on many an occasion with a comfort seat, and they are the way to go if you need more space (I use them so [-]I feel like a DYWKIA[/-] I don't have to talk to anyone as I'm an introvert until the 1st beer). You do need to call the call centre, but you shouldn't be charged a fee as they can't be booked online, so the fee is waived.

The extra seat costs the same as a regular fare, but the taxes are not included. On routes where taxes are high, this can mean your extra seat is half the price of your first seat, so it can be good value. However, as this is a special request, exit rows are out of the question (more so because you can't raise the armrest I suppose, so the extra seat would be useless).

Other useful advice is to make sure they give you the base fare and taxes when you book it, as comfort seats are a manual process, and they've quite often added things wrong for me. So get the details yourself of 1 seat online, and check there's availability for 2 seats, then call and if your comfort seat booking comes to more than it would cost for 2 ordinary seats, they've done something wrong. That said, it's understandable as it's a long process for them and takes over a half hour usually for me on the phone!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
