Rail-Fly
Has anyone done this?

Ideally I want to go to and from the Netherlands but flights there are prohibitive on my dates. This may be a good option.

I’m struggling to get information from SIA about rail destinations from FRA. I’ve phoned and emailed reservations but they say it’s handled by a different department, there are no contact details and I’ll see destinations when I’ve booked. It cannot be added later so I’d appreciate any tips for booking.
Thank you.

I can help you with that, have done that a number of times.

I use the Dutch railways website www.nsinternational.nl because that gives access to all Dutch railways stations.

DM me if you need a hand

Depending on how far in advance (limited to 90 days in many cases) you plan and book then the prices can be exceptional. Some years we've gone across Europe of Euro 19.99 one way on the ICE.

Any of the major country train booking sites are full of information. Our personal favourite is the German one as it seems to send out offers (once on mailing list) quite often.

bahn.com, your mobility portal – travel, holidays, hotels, city breaks and car rentals

For example, within Germany a day ticket as a group (5 adults) can be cheaper than 2 single tickets from an airport to its city - go figure.

Equally, for inter-European travel the offers are equally worthwhile - Austria to France for 39 Euros, or 10 more for first class (which gives you access to the first class rail lounges with unlimited food & drinks AND air-conditioning). This we found out once when the traffic did not exist so we got to the Munich Hauptbahnhof nearly 2 hours before the train with our bags in tow. Everywhere has heating for winter but aircon for summer is not so common, and the chairs were so comfortable. Did I mention the chocolate cakes?

The only drawback with their site is many of the help pages are only in German. However copy and paste the text into Google translate and all is well.

Go to the site and siubscribe to email.

play around on the site to get an idea of what the prices are normally for the day and tomie of week you may want.

One of our favourite trips on a train was first class AMS to FRA - a dedicated cabin for the 3 of us, waiter service including German beer and hearty food. FRA train station is awesome, up the stairs, across a concourse and you are in the airport.
I get what you mean with the cost being part of the SIA ticket, but the cost of the train is very minimal if you book early.
Oh, how we miss Germany.

Thank you for your help everyone. After lots of phone calls and emails with no one knowing what department was involved, I emailed the German office. This deal is only available for bookings originating in Germany. They are unsure why it shows on the Australian site.
I made my booking and will organize the train separately.
