Hi all!

I have a question re transiting at Auckland Airport.

Later this month, I'm flying ADL to LAX with Air NZ via Auckland. I've learned that Air NZ will check my bags all the way through.. Do I still need to clear customs and immigration if I'm transiting? And what exactly do I have to do once I land in Auckland?

Thanks a lot!

Jordan

From the AKL website:

Transferring to another international flight
If you are transiting in Auckland to another international flight* you need to go to the transit and transfer area shown on the airport map.

Within the transit and transfer area you will undergo security screening which is required before you can board your next flight. At this screening point restrictions apply to the liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGS) that you can take through the screening point and on to your flight. Please be aware that liquids, aerosols and gels bought duty free in other airports (including alcohol, perfumes and creams) are subject to these restrictions and may be confiscated. Information on the regulations around liquids, aerosols and gels can be found here.

Once you have cleared the transit screening point the full range of Auckland Airport departures facilities are available to you including duty and tax free shopping, food and beverage facilities, showers and toilets.
So in summary - proceed directly to the transit area. These are usually clearly signposted, and your cabin crew as well as the airline's magazine should be able to provide you transit pax information.

A quick look at the maps gives no indication of where the transit area is, however I would suspect that if you reach the customs line without finding it - you've gone too far and need to ask for help.

* Do you need to apply for a transit visa?

If you're not an Australian citizen travelling on an Australian issued passport, ensure you check the Immigration New Zealand to see if you qualify for visa free transit. If you do not qualify for visa-free transit, you will need to apply in advance which can be done from the previous web link.

thewinchester's link pretty well sums it up. Whren you are wandering down from your arrival gate it's well signposted...just keep an eye out for the sign. You go up some stairs/escalators and the checkpoint is at the top, just a normal security check. Take note of the liquids, duty-free etc. restrictions...they'll be confiscated if you have any with you.

I thought you turned right into the transit security check out of the main hall.. went throught the screening (again) and THEN went up the stairs to the deprture area?

Not that it makes much difference where the stairs are of course!

I did think long and hard about which came first, security or stairs...and still got it wrong so it seems.:oops: My excuse is that it was early morning after LAX-AKL. :D

Ouch.. that's more of an excuse than.. say.. DRINKING.. which by some strange coincidence is what I am doing right now...

Doing SYD-AKL-LAX vv next month... but in C on the 773 so I expect to be feeling "better'n average"... ;)

It depends ...

If you berth at gates 1-10 you head down and you'll see the transit security to the right before everone else heads left along a long kinking corridor to immigration/customs.

If you berth at gates 15/16 you turn right out of the air bridge and head along, through duty free ans continuing along a corridor with travelators going the other way until you reach a RH corner. Transit security should be straight ahead.
