Hi, Just curious how many points you get purely from flying QF to 1200 and VA to 800? if you're platinum already. I realise some people may fly other carriers which may dilute the earnings but if you fly predominantly QF or VA how many points?

I'm thinking VA gives you more points for flying than QF. I haven't looked at all of the redemptions but transcon J costs less points on QF so I'm just trying to weigh things up which is probably my main way of redeeming on these 2 airlines. Haven't redeemed on VA yet. I'm trying to look at plausible goals for these points.

QR F Syd-Doha A380 looks doable in 2 yrs with some nonflying points thrown in. We would fly on to UK/Europe.
Not sure about VA but I guess something SQ or EY related. Possibly Y redemption.

Lastly, presumably it doesn't matter whether you buy EY tickets from VA or EY - you still get the bonus points?? (So basically you can check both sites and buy the cheapest?)

I've just added the flight earned points back 12 months for VA. The total came to 112919. I think the figures will vary enormously though, as many here on AFF take great pride in achieving status at the lowest spend possible. I'm a little different. I don't like spending more than neccessary, but I do have to fly on certain dates and to certain destinations, so I don't have the luxury of hunting out good deals to the degree that some others do. That point tally also netted more SC's than you were after (1060), so I received an average of 106.5 points per SC which would equate to 85222 points for 800SCs. A canny FFer could probably achieve the 800SCs at close to a quarter of the spend I made though, so I'm not sure my info is of much use.

Thats a very interesting question. I think for me it would be very little (1x US 2x Asia rt J and 2 dozen discount domestic Y on Qantas and a lot of J x MH UL around Asia and an F AA or two around the US a year) but I never really care because I'm only interested in product and status benefits. I seem to generate a couple of hundred thousand points a year, but most come from other sources. I didn't really think people made choices based on points flown so am looking forward to the responses.

I will requalify QF Plat this year with just 2 trips: Syd-Lhr-Bud and Syd-Lhr-Lis, both rtn in J, netting about 120K QF pts but more importantly 1200 SCs :)

No I don't really have a good feel for VA points so its helpful. I'm not after the cost of sc earn but the number of points you get for reaching 800 sc. I figure everyone is going for the same target of 800 so they probably reach roughly a similar number of points (a range). Obviously there are variables eg people fly other airlines besides VA but just wondering what the maximum earn is for flying alone (being NZ based its mainly flying to earn).

If you hit the status targets then my flying choices go back to being points based and price and schedule etc. But I'm wondering how much people earn at a platinum level which is maximum earning in the programmes which may help me decide where to direct my flying.

That looks like a lot of points! I'm trying to remember if that is more than what I expected (and by expected I mean "guessed"). I guess if you took 120 flights (10sc min) x minimum 800QP = 96,000 + 16,000 for loyalty bonus 112,000, works out about right. Not that everyone flies the short hops but just rough calculations.

1200sc for QF vs 800sc for VA isn't quite comparing apples with apples either but I'm sure a bit of math will sort it out but I guess in the first place you're aiming for status requalification so you have to hit those targets.

It's not as simple as that. With VA you get 5 points/$ plus 5 points/$ platinum status bonus which equals 10 points/$ total if it's domestic sectors. International moves to miles and fare class earn. So there will be wild variations depending on how different people accrue the 800SCs, which is why I mentioned $/SC. For example, a recent J domestic sale had a SC earned for circa $5 which equates to 50 points/SC......so that would mean 800SCs would earn 40000 points compared to my 800SCs (given previously) giving 85222 points. Of course the difference is that my 800SCs cost more than $5/SC.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

In past twelve months have 144k points and requalified for platinum in Aug last year (renewal date is Aug 31). Have 110 SC until requalification occurs, and that will be by the end of this month.

VA or QF or other?

I see said the blind man....

Hmmm...

I have to fly 50 weeks a year at the back of plane to stand any chance of maintaining Plat - and that ain't gong to happen this year. Your's sounds a far more pleasant way to achieve it, consider me suitably jealous ;)

5 flights around Peru and Chile + a return BNE-LAX-BNE, LAX-JFK-LAX with a side trip to LAS will get me over the 1,200 threshold this year.

All up the QFFP harvest is small at 68,500, but it only cost $9K. Fingers crossed for a couple of F upgrades on the SYD-LAX-SYD to top it all off.

62,000 points so far, and im still 295 scs away from requal wp,

Around 74k points to get the 800SCs for VA. Mix of domestic VA and international SQ predominantly in Y. Sadly.

About to get partner gold which should improve things for the family pool points next year.

Thanks to the Double SC (and Aquire 50% SC offering) I've done well this year. 14 Segments for QF (of which all but 3 flights were on QF), a touch over 1200SC's and only 74k points. I'm only 4 months into my year as well, with at least another 880SC's/60,000 points to come by end of December (all QF), and probably more. It's been my biggest QF year since I joined the program back in 2001. The way i'm going WP1 actually looks like it's almost within grasp without even doing an SC run.

VA hase been more lucrative YTD. Around 94,000 points and 23 segments, but only 14 on VA thanks to needing to fly DL a lot in LOTFAP and the TATL route. Still 3 months to run before my year rolls over though, so probably a few more to come.

I've captured just over 155,000 Qantas Points from Flights in the last 12 months of flying... but in my membership year-to-date, which conveniently sits on 1,200 SCs right now (for a membership year ending in August), I've taken just over 94,000 points across 22 segments (all international with a mix of QF and OW). I'm booked to add another 26,000 points and 440 SCs before my membership year is out.

Cheers,
Matt.

I live a FF dream/nightmare where I work FIFO - from BNE to BOG! About ten trips a year. Please do not ask me how much that costs as that would force me to face reality and explain why I should have retired by now.

Ouch! That is extreme.

As far as I know there is no such extreme FIFO anywhere else. And the bizarre thing is I hate heights. But I have learned to rely on good pilots. Thank you :)

Apparently I have only earned ~60,000 QFF points from flying the past 12 months.

It has been as high as ~120,000 QFF points in previous years. Flew a fair few award bookings overseas the previous 12 months which goes part of the way to explaining the drop.
