Apologies in advance from the noobie.

Wanting to take family to coughet from Adelaide in mid January 2015 (have to be there on 16th). Done some research on Qantas website but as never having used points internationally just wanting to make sure I am not missing anything.

Stacks of QFF points, Platinum member, any suggestions for best options?

Do more seats become available from now or less?

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers Andrew

Hi there

I usually start watching for Classic flights as soon as they open up (when I know in advance I am travelling) which is just under a year ahead. I was watching for flights for next year for HK - France and the day they opened up, they were available every day of the month. A day later and the date I'd wanted was gone as were almost half the other dates.

It is really hard to get more than 2 seats at a time. And Adelaide not being serviced directly by QF means you will need to go via Eastern states. And January is peak holiday time.

You have status as Platinum so maybe call them up if the flights are available and they may open up. But it also depends on how many seats you want.

Thanks Pushka. Your last paragraph...are you suggesting that given my status a call to QFF may see them offer more award seats to me?? Has that been your experience?

Cheers Andrew

I think its meant to be one of the unpublished benefits of Platinum that you can call up Qantas and ask if they could open extra award seats on a flight and they may do it...

Not a platinum so can't confirm this or how often they do it...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

A couple of comments:
-Award availability will also certainly become less, not more over time
-You may want to travel in two "groups" - I'm not sure how many of you there are but finding 4 or 5 (?) award seats on the same flights, especially over the summer holidays would be quite a feat.
-If you're having trouble getting all the way to coughet on points, try and get to Singapore with Qantas and then pick up a cheap Jetstar flight the rest of the way. These can go for anywhere between around $20 and $60ish.

As a platinum I'd certainly try calling. Nothing to lose. And maybe try online for just 1 seat and see if there is any availability at all. And as now suggested, try different travel times. I called up yesterday and they could see availability that wasn't available online.

HI All

Thanks for theses incredibly useful pieces of advice. A few things fro me to look into. Cheers Andrew

I'd seriously consider redeeming for JQ via MEL. Very easy dom to intl transfer (no bus like in SYD), FLounge access and then a new B787 flight directly to HKT. As much as QF seems 'nicer' you'll add an additional stop via SIN or BKK if you go with QF and I dont think you can book the BKK-HKT leg with QFF points anyway.

Yes everyone complains about JQ but with a family in tow I would go the more direct route on a brand new plane. You can fly QF ADL-MEL if you want.
