Hey Folks,

Please excuse me for I am pretty new to these forums.

Im due to fly Sydney to DFW on QF7, next month (15th), and have been tossing up wether to book a business ticket or a PE and hope to upgrade.

Iv dug up a few old threads from other forums, which have claimed that booking a PE ticket and selecting specific seats will put you in the business end of the cabin.
Whilst im not fussed on the business service so much I am more after it for the recline/ lay flat seating, as a 15hour flight then a connecting 4hr flight and a long drive afterwards is going to ruin my already bad back/neck.

So my question would be, is this the case ?

And if so, where / how can I find out if the specific flight I want will have this option available ?
( I am slightly flexible with dates)

Plane is 747-400 from what iv read
I am currently only a bronze, maybe back to silver by time of flight, and only around 70k QFF points.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Chad.

I did QF7/8 in J back in January. Being able to sleep flat on the plane is such a benefit and helps to reduce jet lag. From what I heard, using points to upgrade is a lottery and is based on status.

I think for memory you would need 45K point to upgrade each way Y+ to J. It goes on status as to who gets the upgrade when requested with points.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I am with the others. I have never really seen the utility or value in premium economy. If you are wanting to fly in business, just book business. Better that than to spend the whole flight in disappointment ... and a very long flight at that.

Thanks for the replies fella's

Whilst I dont think i'll be dissapointed by PE, it would certinaley be a bonus to get the Business seats
And at almost 5k more return, it cuts decent chunk in my holiday fund.

So I guess a more direct question to ask is, can seating availability be viewed prior to purchasing tickets ?

Just call Qantas. They are usually happy to tell you. If you are angling for an op-up, you need to make sure that premium economy is almost full.

I think the OP may be referring to 4 class sold as 3, so was hoping to pay for PE but getting to choose a skybed.

As far as I know all DFW services are on upgraded planes, so a PE ticket will get you a PE seat. Only way to get a J seat is to use points or pay for J to begin with.

In the days when QF was flying four class aircraft on the DFW route there was definitely value in Y+ if you were a WP. ;)

I'll be doing the same in June in PE. As the flight leaves at 1pm my theory is that the majority of the flight will be in "awake" hours. And besides I never sleep well heading west to east anyhow.

So not applying for an upgrade. Will be happy to be on PE and if an op up would be a genuine bonus.

Coming back from LAX however.....

If you don't want to or haven't called qantas you could try expertflyer.com it has features for seeing potential loading but comes at a cost (maybe someone might help and look it up for you). Free account can show you seats available on the plane. Although available seats should not be mistaken for availability as not everyone is pedantic about selecting their seat in advance.

There is a thread in Q's section of this site for upgrade probability requests. Someone in there may help with loading and chances of points upgrade.

Flightstats will show you the loadings without subscription or fee.
