Morning All

Received an email from Qantas yesterday notifying me of time changes to my QF5 flight on the 25th July. It's now flying to Singa via Jakarta, leaving Sydney at 13.25 and arriving Singa at 22.30 for a duration of 11h 05min . Called Qantas this morning and they weren't sure why this was happening. Flights on the 24th and 26th July are currently keeping the same original timing and routing. I'm actually flying originating in Melbourne, currently booked on QF426 and was planning a few hours flounging in Syd. Qantas have offered to book me straight on the direct QF35 but obviously this means I'm down 40SC (all flights revenue in J)

So first off I'm wondering if anyone knows why the flight is being diverted via Jakarta or has experience of this diversion (issues / delays etc?).

Secondly I'm pondering what my best option is from the following:-

1) Take the QF35 and lose the 40SC
2) Move QF426 to an earlier flight, enjoy the flounge and the tour of SE Asia
3) Move QF426 to a later flight and take the Emirates flight Syd to Singa
4) Move all flights to 24th July (Least favourite option as possibility of losing days work and $)

I'm WP with a renewal date 31st Oct. Lagging slightly behind the countdown at the moment as have had lots of Melbourne based work lately, currently sitting on 490SCs. However next few months looking fairly hectic so i should get across the line again this year. Open to anyone's thoughts and any other options i may have missed.

Thanks

BG

Would you be able to claim Original Routing Credit if you moved to the direct QF35? They may see that change as voluntary rather than involuntary.

Move to an earlier ex-MEL if you want more time in First Lounge or go the later Emirates flight on QF codeshare.

Thanks guys for all your replies..

JohnK - hadn't thought of that, i'll inquire with Qantas tomorrow..

eminere - good point! That makes option 3 redundant..

hutch - QF81 looks to be leaving Sydney too early, would have to leave Melbourne stupid o'clock.

I think my best bet is to see if i can get original routing credits and if not take an earlier flight to Sydney and enjoy the diversion.

Will report back.. Thanks again..

Just a quick update. Received another email this morning notifying me that I've now been moved to QF81. Just spoken to Qantas and QF5 has now been cancelled on the 25th. I think I'll leave everything as is at the moment and see if any further changes occur over the next few weeks before making any final decisions.

Interesting indeed! According to QF.com if you try and book SYD-SIN on 25 July, you are only given the option of QF81. However, there is a QF6 operating back that day. If you search flights to CGK you'll find QF5 doing SYD - CGK (subject to regulatory approval) and then the 'return flight' operates CGK-SIN-SYD as QF6.

Anyway, at least with QF81 there is a better chance of it being refurb!

3) Move QF426 to a later flight and take the Emirates flight Syd to Singa

Better not do that as you'll be waiting for the EK flight to SIN.

Doh! I presumed the OP had looked that up!

Does that mean SYD-SIN on QF5 will become SYD-CGK on QF5 & CGK-SIN on QF6?
Good SC earn :)

Can't book QF5 to SIN that day... although I haven't tried a multi stop.

SYD - CGK - QF5
CGK - SIN - QF5
SIN - SYD - QF6

I have seen QF do this a couple of times this year, but they have been bookable through to SIN via CGK. I assume in this case it's a result of demand ex SYD for Indonesia but less demand ex CGK, combined with excess capacity at SIN.

They've closed all booking classes for SYD-CGK-SIN, but SYD-CGK is still available for sale - although only Y and B in economy class, plus a bunch of J/C/D seats at the pointy end. CGK-SIN is all empty though, and while you can't buy it via the website, it is being offered by agents, and also available as a points redemption. I'm guessing if anyone happens to somehow buy this ticket, he/she would be the only pax onboard.

I suspect some people will book CGK -SYD and be routed via SIN on way home. Just checked expedia and CGK-SIN is priced at $78 in Y or $395 in J

Forgot to mention I did inquire around Original Routing Credits. Not an option!
Who told you not an option?

I was on LST-MEL-SYD-BNE itinerary and when I got to MEL the Qantas Lounge service desk advised the MEL-SYD was delayed and I may miss connection to BNE. I was asked and then put on direct MEL-BNE flight so not really involuntary.

I requested Original Routing Credit and got it.

If the airline screws up your itinerary you are eligible for Original Routing Credit even if you choose the new route.

Premium line said not a starter when i called to inquire around the second change to my flight. Yet to decide what to do, but good info JohnK, many thanks.
