Hey All - been catching up on some forum reading and I'm starting to feel nervous about my flight MEL-PER tonight (4/6) - its on a 743....

Whats the story with these jumbo's? Are they too old to be in service???
I noticed last nights cancelled - hopefully that was just fog?

Maybe I should look at moving to another flight....

Oh and when I did online check in , the boarding pass says boarding @ 0110!?
Scheduled departure is 1940...

Not a good sign from the heavens at all...

I am not sure what is going on with it, but looking at the departures on the MEL airport site shows the following curious listing (taken at 0115 04Jun08) - note the highlighted entries - I suspect we are seeing a trickle down effect after the fog yesterday morning...

<edit>
Looking later in the day, there is still a QF481 scheduled for 19:40 departure, so it looks to me like the OLCI system checked you into the wrong QF481 on the 4th of June (yesterday's delayed one which would fit the 0140 departure listed in the screen dump above) because the one from yesterday got delayed to today... ??? I would guess the OLCI app was written assuming that there would be only one of each flight number per day, and delaying QF481 past midnight produced an out of bounds error.

I would be ringing QF to check with them...

Doesn't look good !
Oh well sometimes as they say... it happens !

The 743's are old but no reason they should be that much more un-reliable than other newer planes, plenty of older ones flying around.
Anyway as stated by dot and from what i have been reading today its a flow on effect from some fog.

I'm currently waiting for QF485 MEL-PER for 8.25am dep on a 743. It is running 30mins late but probably due to cancelled flights last night because of the fog. The flight is overbooked and the Qantas desk had already printed a number of boarding passes in advance to prevent some of us missing out on a seat. QP is pretty busy for a Wed.

Just been informed that QF481 was cancelled due to fog last night and passengers moved to QF485 this morning. The problem is that QF told them it was a 9.55am dep, so now we have to wait for them to turn up when we should have left at 8.25am. So not a 743 issue as such.
If there is fog tonight in MEL and you're on QF481, you might want to pack a toothbrush.

The QF485 is scheduled 90 minutes late this morning at 10:00.

The scheduled operating aircraft flew without PAX as QF6112 PER-MEL, arriving at ~04:15 this morning. It was originally scheduled to flay as QF6113 arriving 09:30 - hence the change.

This same aircraft is also scheduled to operate QF481 this evening.

I imagine any delays on the classic (or any services for that matter) are are knock on effect from the fog yesterday. I checked in yesterday to go to Sydney at 10:30am for an 11am departure. Didn't leave Melbourne until about 6:10pm. It will probably take another day to get things back in order. I know a few extra flights have been added to Perth on the Airbus to help with previous cancelled flights and delays.
