Will be travelling in few months time, and got a rather 'weird' booking as per below, need some answers if anyone willing to share :

QF > MEL - SYD, Y
TG > SYD - BKK, F
MH > BKK - KUL, Y

Worried about my baggage allowance and also whether i have to clear custom or it will be check all the way to KUL. I've read the Qantas page and it mentioned 2x checked baggage for Gold, maximum 32kg each, does that mean i can take 64kg, i dont need that much, since im only allowed 50kg for TG. And for the last segment, as OWE Sapphire member, i understand i can get extra allowance as well.. Lastly, anyone have the experience where i can check all the way thru or do i need to clear custom at SYD or even BKK ??

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You do need to clear customs and immigration in SYD, if your QF flight number is above QF(A)400.
In 99.99& of cases these days, you do need to clear outgoing immigration at your last point of departure from Aust.
By flying TG, you loose earning the minimal QF points and QF SC, but gain it by flying MH from BKK to KUL if this was a revenue ticket.
As they are not in the same laision, but if its a through ticket, you could ask in MEL for an OPC (outgoing passenger card) and fill it in when you have time in MEL airport, as your flight to SYD would most likely be a domestic one.
Pity you are not flying QF to BKK though, you could then at the least have guaranteed through luggage, and access to the QF SYDi J lounge.
If you do get access to the QF transfer bus, that is a great thing, but if they get you to use the T bus, its a bit more of a pain in the bum.

Is this all on the one ticket? If so your bags will be checked through, and I believe the significant carrier rule will apply (the carrier taking you 'overwater' will be the one who's allowance applies - for the TG allowance).

Unless you are flying on a single alliance, extra baggage afforded by status will not come in to play for airlines not part of the alliance (but may apply to the relevant sectors, but that's not usually much help).

Your post has little relevance to the OP. Nowhere were SCs asked about. And considering that the OP is in F to BKK and therefore has access to the SQ F lounge in SYD the QF J lounge is hardly something to aspire to.

Annielee, if you are travelling on the one PNR you should be able to drop your bags in MEL and collect them in KUL. In BKK just head through transit security.

Most likely the TG sector is on UA award. Qantas no longer interlines on separate tickets.
So you definitely need to collect luggage from domestic and go to International and check it in yourself.

As regards to MH leg, you could probably ask TG to tag it through all the way from SYD to BKK.

I was thinking the same - the TG sector would be an F award on a Star Alliance carrier (I suspect that Pooch just assumed TG is a QF partner and possibly even a codeshare, which of course is incorrect).

QF won't interline to TG on separate bookings so hopefully MEL-SYD leaves enough time to make the transfer to int with bags. I'd then suggest TG may or may not interline through to MH, else would have to do same at BKK.

I can't conceive of any paid booking that would combine these carriers in this way though I suppose it would be possible as an incredible price :)

Thank you for all your comments, to answer the questions:
- 3 separate PNR
- TG is on United award ticket
- QF and MH will be revenue

Guess i need to clear custom at Syd and take the $6 bus to the international terminal, no big deal.. at least now i know what is excepted.. but as for baggage allowance, say i will be safe at 50kg for all leg ?? Still undecided to buy Y or J ticket from BKK to KUL..
-QF - 64kg
-TG - 50kg
-MH - 50kg (if J) or 40kg (if Y)

Sorry Mod/Jessica, im happy for this thread to be move if needed..

Your QF 64Kg suggests either 2 pax or one with Gold or higher status (2 bagsx32kg each)?

If QF status, it should work for MH as well. TG is irrelevant due to the F class ticket.
you *could* ask QF to tag your bag through MEL-SYD-BKK but it's unlikely they'd do it. At any rate you need to check in with TG at international anyway for BP (almost certain QF won't or can't issue).

Here's the other thing *I* would do given 3 separate PNR's....

you haven't given the timings but I would make a very wide berth between each of the bookings to allow for delays, cancel etc. I mean if something happens to QF MEL-SYD you wouldn't want a short transfer window to the BKK flight, and same with BKK-KUL (at very least I'd prob overnight in BKK)

Just remember that none of the airlines will bear any responsibility if you miss one of the sectors due to late/cancel inbound and you could be stranded.

From what I can see, the MH limit in Y will be 30kg, and 40 in J:

Malaysia Airlines Baggage Allowance | MAS Baggage Check in | Malaysia Airlines

MH is a oneWorld airline, so the extra allowed for oneWorld sapphires applies.
I am probably reading too much into it:
oneworld members

  • oneworld Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby members: 2 piece baggage limitation applies.
  • oneworld Sapphire only: One-piece additional baggage (piece concept) or 15kg (weight concept) for checked baggage allowance travelling on any oneworld partners applies
  • oneworld Emerald : One-piece additional baggage (piece concept) or 20kg (weight concept) for checked baggage allowance travelling on any oneworld partners applies .
