Hi,
I am travelling with my wife and almost 3-year old to MSP from SYD via DFW in December. Would appreciate any thoughts on what the long trip to DFW is like, whether I should burn points on a Y+ upgrade request and what is the best lounge option at DFW (I am QF SG) as i hear there may be one AA lounge better than the others (although I am warned they are generally quite cough overall!)
Thanks!

I've done the flight 20+ times. Always in Y. The flight is definitely long. There's nothing you can do about that. One saving grace is that it's rarely full, so you may end up with a spare seat next to you. When I've been forced to fly in Y on that route I've used points to cover the cost of an exit row seat.

AA lounges will likely be what you are stuck with at DFW. Voucher system operates for drinks. Don't expect much, but the shower will be welcome.

It's a long way, but you should be ok, as mentioned often spare space in Y so I'd risk it if you're trying to conserve points and $$$'s.

I've never had long enough at DFW to get to a lounge, always just quick transfers some running, so can't comment on that.

It's always worth upgrading on a long flight imho.

On the switch to MSP I'd probably just go with the lounge in whatever terminal the MSP flight departs from. Best showers are in A (former Flagship Lounge) and it's probably the nicest lounge in my view.

At DFW the return flight departs from Terminal D.
You would therefore have access to the designated Qantas lounge, which is a few rooms in a multi-airline facility, or the Admirals Club.

As Gold, the food is probably better in the Qantas lounge, the view better from Admirals Club. Both are average options.
If Platinum the First Dining room in AA lounge would tip the scales.

wow thanks for the quick replies...On balance I think it might be worth saving the points particularly if the flight is not often full (I assume for weight restrictions?) in the hope we can get a spare seat or two to stretch out. I have tried to pre-book the upper deck economy seats but looks like they are off limits to mere SG members...
Sounds like the terminal A lounge is the one to go for as a good shower will help after such a long trip...I did transit once through DFW coming in from EZE but the connection was too tight to test the lounges.
Presumably I might have to pay for my son as the AA guest policy is unlikely to be a generous as QF?

That's correct.

In the early days of this route when they tried to fill it to capacity on the return leg it often had to detour via Brisbane. Once they reduced the load it's now rare to be diverted.

The early days was in a 747 and it was scheduled to return via BNE. The switch to the A380 removed the BNE stop.

That's not entirely correct. A380 had to frequently divert until they stopped filling it.

I've spent quite a bit of time at KDFW - here's my advice.

Lounges - Personally, the AA lounge in concourse D is probably my favourite AA lounge - certainly one of the best (to clarify, all my flights have gone from D so I haven't tried the others - but certainly compared to AA lounges at other ports). For drinks, all basic drinks (including basic spirits, local beers) were free to all members - no voucher required. You can use your 2 vouchers for coughtails or premium drinks. Note - don't forget to tip $1 a drink even for the freebies. There's an awesome view from the lounge - but the food, like domestic Qantas clubs, is nothing to write home about. However, I always like to have a meal at TGIFs while I'm there so it's not a problem for me.

As you know the BA/QF lounges are off limits when flying AA, but seriously no great loss. I'm not a fan - I'd almost prefer the AA lounge. It's so
small and pokey. Drinks - at least spirits - were table service which I found really annoying (trying to take the edge off the 17 hour Y flight that awaits)

AA lounge in A is temporarily closed.

As for SYD-DFW - having flown it many times - it's hell in Y. Just prepare for and accept that. Do what you can to make it better - absolutely try to upgrade to Y+ or get an exit row. I've flown Y on the upper deck and it was very good - I had no problems selecting seats as SG so it might just be booked out.

DFW is so much better than LAX - I make a point of using it as my gateway whenever I'm flying to the US. If you get time explore the airport - there's some great stuff there.

Regarding entry for your son, we transited through DFW in May (PER-SYD-DFW-MIA) and had no trouble gaining entry to the AA lounge for my wife and 2 kids (5 and 9) as a QF SG. Can’t remember which terminal, but next flight was on AA. That lounge had the best shower I’d ever had, several jets up the walls, it was like standing in a spa! Just what you need after a 15 hour flight.
The flight is looongggg, but I found the QF A380 comfortable in Y.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

QF has a contract lounge in terminal D at DFW. AA has lounges in all terminals other then E. You would be able to access any of those lounges. (All terminals are connected airside, both by train and walking tunnels and/or skybridges.
The AA lounge in A was the old Flagship lounge before they removed it (but it still had the F level showers), however AA are now running a lounge refurbishment program which includes bring an F lounge back to DFW. It appears that the A lounge is currently closed for the refit.

If you give us your dates and flight details one of us can check the loadings and you can make an informed decision on whether you need to go for an upgrade or nt

Thanks eric2011 - it is QF7 on 18 dec...

Thanks everyone for the very helpful advice. Much appreciated.

As Steady has posted the availability above. The seat map shows a number of centre row 4's available and about 5 or 6 window rows free at this stage. Still shows 6 W (premium econ) available but no code Z which are the premium econ award & upgrade seats

Thanks steady and eric...will hold fire on the premium econ upgrade request and hope we can stretch out on a free econ row!

Thanks for the info on this thread. I’m doing this flight with my husband and our 10 year old in about 11 days in Y! As all the upstairs are now reserved I’ve read that the rear of the plane downstairs is a good spot as it’s often blocked off half empty and near the snack bar so some more room to get up and walk around, anyone have any thoughts on this????

I agree with what you have said. Access to the snack bar is a good perk of being at the back of the plane.
