Having just cracked a QF Plat, and having my VA Plat locked in for another year, I wonder about one thing. Specifically, my QF Plat card just arrived and it current until March 2020 - which gives me 17 months! This presumably is because my joining anniversary is March. Doesn't VA reset the clock when you attain a level, ie: move from Silver to Gold, or from Gold to Plat?

Also getting to QF Plat was a tad easier, given the extra points barrier, by the two 50 SC bonus tiers that I passed on the way to the initial 1,400 point threshold which - as we all know - is 400 higher than VA.

Because VA has no higher target and I already have my partner on Plat and adult kids on Gold, there is no further incentive to fly VA (or QF, since I don't see the point of P1 and it is too far away!) AND I have a Kris Gold I'd like to keep. So I'll fly some NZ and some SQ for a while.....

Yes, the date you attain a new higher status it resets to become your new annual review date.

That's a great position to be in. Good luck.

You could always use the P1 gift of QF WP for your Partner or a friend.

Not bad, 1400SC's in 7 months while mixing with other frequent flyer programs.

The Double SC on a J ticket to NYC and a First return to Christchurch (QF ticket, Emirates metal) did the 1400 SC in two trips with one Melbourne return and some internal F flights in the USA. I find those USA flights the best accumulator of SC's for VA and for QF since some of the fares are quite reasonable. Compared to the extortionate J fares across to Perth ... who pays those ??!!

For me the incentive to keep flying VA is the high points earn for platinum. If your travel is often last minute and/or flexible a few domestic trips can be 20-30k points even in Y.

Not exactly what the OP is referring to, but the thread title is QF Plat -V- VA Plat so I'll give my thoughts for the domestic comparison.

I really only fly QF/VA domestically at the moment (occasional short haul Int) so my comments are pretty much domestically focused.

My opinion is that as much as VA often really annoy me with their frequent ambivalence toward their loyal status members over their embarrassing boot licking of non-loyal (and even disparaging) QF status holders, VA do in fact have the superior dom business product and status benefits. Although on paper QF and VA look similar, VA usually succeed in providing the benefits whereas QF promise them, but generally fail to deliver them and honestly couldn't give a rats backside that they failed.

I have tried QF, mainly with a view to future Int. travel, but also due to QF's LT status and also QFs superior business lounges. I've now held both QF and VA plat simultaneously for a period of a couple of years and I must admit the QF business lounge, although better, has become boring. I'm sick of their Mexican fetish, which leaves pretty much what VA offer except for spirits (which I can live without), so the lounge is no longer the attraction it was and QF don't have business lounges in all airports anyway. I'm yet to really try the QF Int. status benefits (which I'm assuming will be far better than VA's hotchpotch), but there are some shining benefits with VA (SQ suites anyone). I'll be keen to assess the recent changes to the VA international program (NZ, SQ devaluation, Int. lounges) more thoroughly and see how that impacts my decisions with QF/VA status. QF LT status is really the only parameter left in my consideration. On the surface, it seems a no brainer to push for LT status with QF, but when it's all said and done, QF fail IMHO with providing the promised benefits, so unless they adjust a pretty cough attitude toward status benefit provision, there may be no real point in having the LT status with them.

As it stands, I'll renew QF plat for next year (as I have some Int travel plans where I will use it) ... and assess it's effective value, which will also give me time to assess how VA changes are impacting me and then I'll decide whether to continue to spend more than I need just to keep status (as I'm currently doing), or ditch one or the other. My thoughts right now, are that QF is not worth the additional spend and I'll likely return to just having VA, but time will tell.
