QF16 Los Angeles Brisbane 23:30 (Mon) 06:20 Cancelled

Brisbane radio reports that it landed in Rocky due to fog in BNE this morning.
Wonder what the locals thought this morning with a 747 dropping in?

It happens up to three times a day when Shoalwater Bay is active for Exercise Wallaby with the SDF when you also get C5's, C17's and also Apaches sitting on the ramp, I would say they would be used to it!

Would the crew be out of hours to wait long enough for the fog to clear and get to BNE? Thus pax stuck (on 738s perhaps)? Or would they fly a 744 crew up there to shuttle the a/c and pax back to BNE?

But a 747 is still unusual. Give me an airliner to look at anyday over military equipment. :)

The 3 x heavies each day are usually chartered SQ airliners full of half of the Singaporean population, its quite surreal to be at Changi and see on the departure boards 3-5 SQ numbers with destination Rockhampton when the yearly exercises are on! ROK gets an AN124 or a 747 charter once every two weeks for mining as well.

Funny, BNE also seemed pretty foggy yesterday when we were diverted there on QF86 HKG-MEL due to high winds in MEL and insufficient fuel on the A330.

On the other hand, the high winds did not appear to cause any difficulties for the CX A330 we were following to MEL, nor any other flights. Sound decision by the Captain of course, but had to wonder why we were the only plane with such low fuel.

Would have been quite funny if we had also been subsequently diverted to ROK as well due to the fog!

BNE did not have a fog issue yesterday, just rain and low cloud :D, had it not been suitable you would have gone to SYD or NTL, ROK would have been adding distance for no good reason.

!

Pax Load or Cargo load would be two reasons that immediately spring to mind. A/C config is another.

Well having worked at Rocky base not far from the strip when the exercises are happening I can tell you it is impressive when the big birds go over but the locals dont bat an eyelid.

They tend to be more focused on the price the 1 year old steers are getting down at the saleyards and rightly so, or where the latest set of bulls bits have gone to, from the statues in town!

Took off from Brisbane this morning (in the fog) going to Rocky on DJ - say this rather large plane out the window the size of half the terminal before landing and thought it must be the LAX flight. Still impressive in such a small airport. The photo is of the plane from the terminal.
