Hubby and I are travelling on Emirates from Adelaide to London, codeshare with Qantas on Boxing day. We are travelling back on QF1 to Melbourne, for which we have requested an upgrade.
While our ADL - LON flights were booked through Qantas (and upgrades requested through points), I understand that it's not possible to use QFF points to upgrade on Emirates metal.

Note that re-routing through SYD or MEL for QF1 or QF9 is not an option for us, as we have family commitments on Boxing Day in ADL we need to adhere to. We also booked our fares via Expedia Brazil (avoiding some $1400 worth of fuel surcharges in the process), and I don't like my luck navigating through the site for flight changes or the probably cost!

Is there any other way we might be able to procure an upgrade on our Emirates flights (ideally ADL - DXB), either paid or using QFF points? I understand that Emirates sometimes sends out offers to purchase upgrades via email a week or so before the flight, and have vaguely heard that it might be worth requesting a paid upgrade at checkin - does anyone have any thoughts on how we might be able to go about this?

Hubby and I are both gold, and have basic Emirates FF status if that helps. Any feedback appreciated.

As you are on the QF codeshare that offer may not be made to you, if indeed it is. You can ask at check-in for a paid upgrade if there is space available and pay the difference. I would prepare to fly in Economy!

I agree asking about a paid upgrade is the obvious best path, normally I would suggest an OpUp is always a possibility on Boxing Day, quite surprised to see the plane looking wide open across all cabins!

Available Seats:
First: 2 (at least) Business: 7 (at least) Coach: 7 (at least) Other: n/a
Fare Classes: F/2 A/2 J/4 C/4 I/4 O/7 P/0 Y/7 E/7 R/7 W/7 M/7 B/7 U/7 K/7 H/7 Q/7 L/7 T/7 V/0 X/0

Thanks for the replies. We will try our luck with a paid upgrade. On another note, given that Qantas sent out an email to all and sundry yesterday stating that the sale fare bucket restriction on international upgrades is being waived in Dec / Jan, I'm now wondering if we'll be up against increased competition to secure our DXB - MEL upgrade on QF1 19 Jan! Can only hope...

Hi all. Just a final update on this. We flew the first leg of our flight to Europe yesterday, QF8441 ADL - DXB codeshare. Amazingly, BOTH hubby and I were upgraded. Given that we're both just QF gold, with no Emirates Skywards status, this was very unexpected. Not sure why it happened, but the following might have helped: Hubby and I were booked on individual bookings (I thought this might help with any upgrade opportunities, as these almost never seem to come about when travelling on same booking with partner) and we were the first to check in at the oneworld emerald / business counter at ADL. Whatever the reason, a good outcome, and will be great if we can secure upgrade with points on QF1 on the way home.

The individual bookings may have helped - but I read this simply as EK wants your business, custom, and possibly loyalty? SO that a good result for you. I am betting that since you live in ADL you may consider booking EK next time you go to Europe?

How does this work whereby my upcoming trip to Bangkok is on QF metal going to BKK and QF codeshare on EK metal coming back (the return leg is actually booked in J class, so i think that leg was valued at $2525 or something and the total ticket is about $4900 or there abouts). I was just doing some looking, and saw return first class using the code share on expedia is $6000.

Is mixed cabin fares now allowed? Would this be something i could call Qantas and be put in First on the QF code share flight on my return for like $500?

Or am i all wrong about this? If i wanted F i must do both legs in EK metal?
