QF Economy Sale Fare - MEL - HKG return. No show cheaper than cancellation?

Hi all
I've got a economy sale fare round trip booked MEL - HKG for mid 2019.

It is highly likely I'll not be able to make this trip due to caring for someone.

The flights were booked through BudgetAir (won't make this mistake again...), they apparently charge a $85 administration fee for any cancellation, on top of the QF cancellation fee.

In this instance it seems it would be best to simply not show up for the outbound flight than to incur the $85 fee. Am I missing something here?

edit: Name change not permitted and changing the flights to a more appropriate date was going to be more expensive than the actual flights themselves!

Probably not. The cancellation fees on cheap international economy fares are often about as much as the fare itself.

Is there such thing as a fee for not showing? Or do you simply forfeit the remainder of the itinerary?

I have heard of a no show fee but not sure how airlines would go about charging the fee.

With Qantas don't turn up for outbound sector and your inbound sector will auto cancel and you should be fine.

No show fees are only relevant if you claim a refund, or try to change a flight after no showing.

If you simply miss a flight, and then do nothing with the booking, you will simply forfeit the fare. The won't send you a bill for a no show.
