Hi,

It's been a while since I've flown on QF so just wanted to get some opinions. I'm redeeming some FF points for a quick trip from SIN-MEL and unfortunately there are no available direct flights for the days I want to fly so my options at the moment are on a QF 747 to Brisbane overnight then connecting to Melbourne or a BA 777-200/300 to Sydney overnight with a connection to Melbourne. I've not flown Club World before so am wondering which would be your preference if you were in my shoes - stick with QF or go for BA?
Luckily there seems to be availability coming back on EK so I'm going to opt for that. Also, on a separate note, does anyone know if the Qantas Chauffeur drive service will apply to me if I choose the BA option?

Thanks in advance

I'd stick with QF in J as I'm not a fan of the rear facing CW seats with the divider that goes up and down every 5 minutes at times.
I mean I do enjoy the occasional chat with my seat mate but that seating configuration in CW is the pits IMHO.

I find the reverse seating layout in BA a real turn off - even if travelling with a partner, if near the window you need to climb over the legs of a stranger to get out and they need to climb over you if in an aisle. If you do go BA strongly advise the upper deck as it is quieter.

I would agree with that.

From Qantas Industry Sales Site - Policies and Procedures - Chauffeur Drive
Qantas will extend the Chauffeur Drive service to other Qantas International flights greater than 12 hours long progressively in 2014.

The service is also available for Qantas customers travelling on Qantas flights operated by Emirates to/from destinations where Emirates also offer Chauffuer Drive

Its a 777, no upper deck.

In with the masses then. The seats still annoy me! I have had some pretty ordinary service on BA so it is not my choice but would do it if needed. Is this the new 777 or the older one?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

No brainer IMHO. QF all the way on the A380 (although it's via DXB not SIN or HKG).

It's the new 777-300ER - now used exclusively on the LHR-SYD route (BA15/16).

Also, you won't get chauffeur on a points booking - with QF or BA.

Actually that would appear to not be correct

Both Commercial and Frequent Flyer redemption customers holding tickets for
confirmed flights in any class within First and Business on eligible Qantas and
Emirates international flights; and
Frequent Flyer upgrades confirmed at least 48 hours prior to departure;

Really? That would be nice. I have an F Classic Award MEL-LHR (on BA metal) next month returning on QF10 in J and I am not able to book a chauffeur on-line - apparently because it is a FF redemption. I will chase it up.

Thanks Ansett. I've just checked my booking and things appear to have changed in the last month or so - I can now book a chauffeur for each leg. Great news.

Congrats have a great trip and enjoy the Limo service :D

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have to admit that I was quite curious about how the Club World product would stack up against Qantas J but it seems like everyone is of the same opinion. The only thing I need to weigh up now is whether it's more convenient to transfer at SYD or BNE. Is 1hr 45 mins enough time to clear customs and make the transfer to MEL in BNE or SYD? Great news too on the Chauffeur service!

I'll go against the grain - I much prefer the BA layout to the traditional one - it "feels" like there's more space available, more privacy (except if you end up in the middle ones - then it's just like side-by-side J on QF), and IMHO getting out over a sleeping seatmate is easier.

These days, it's heresy to admit, I'm almost at the point where I prefer to save the points and go non stop in Y SIN-MEL, than add 4-5 hrs to a 7 hr trip just to travel in J, as I know leaving SIN at 7:30-8pm I ain't going to sleep anyway ....

But aside from that I've heard some good reviews on BA's 77W product (if it was the old BA 744 that used to ply SIN-SYD QF would seem best). But, as it is, I'd consider just taking the flight combination that minimises overall travel time. Actually, I'd even favour SYD - as if there is a delay or you are early - there are flights every 15 mins to MEL for most of the morning peak, whereas they only run hourly from BNE, and thus more flexibility.

Thanks to all for their input. As irony would have it, a direct EK flight just became available today despite nothing being available for the past month so I've cancelled the original flights (I ended up going with the BA option for the very reasons dajop provided) and paid the change fee to do away with the hassle of connecting flights.

I'd take BA over QF any day. The reason I don't is points earn, comp upgrades to F, and the DXB F Lounge. I love the CW rear facing window seat..it is like a mini suite.

especially the bulkhead facing ones a you have direct aisle access.

These are the only BA Club World seats I have flown in.

Still the foot rest when flat is too small for me (although much much better than economy).

The OP wants to go from Singapore to Melbourne if I read the post correctly. So the only A380 on that route, or any route into Australia (from SQ) would be with SQ.

Also it doesn't seem if the question of limo transfer has been answered, the answer is on such a short flight you wouldn't get it even if you do fly on QF as there are time limitations on the transfers. But as you asked about BA the answer would be a big fat no anyway.
