Hi all, I'm flying on QF 18 on Sept 11 and have a few questions about it.
1. Will I essentially be in the dark for the entire flight (take off at sunset and land 30-60mins after sunrise)?
2. What is the meal schedule given the ~5hrs from JFK-to LAX (ddparting at 7pm) , ~2hrs at LAX, and then the ~14hrs to Sydney

Thanks!

Hi PaulST - I've just done this a few days ago, so should be able to give you some recent insights.

NYC is still quite light at 6:45PM for departure, and as you are chasing the sun across the continent, it is probably a couple of hours of reasonable light before you end up looking at a long sunset & dusk through to LAX. It will get dark before you arrive to LAX (maybe completely so, about an hour out). From LAX to SYD you are only going to get any natural light about 1.5 hours out from Sydney. The crew tend to make everyone keep their window shades down for most of the flight anyway.

In terms of meal schedules - I was in J, and so this might vary elsewhere on the bird - we were served a supper shortly after departure from JFK. This was a full meal, and was much appreciated for us, as the food in the BA JFK lounge (even in the Galleries/F lounge) was not much to speak of. We then ate again about 5 hours later at LAX in the lounge during the transit, and then there were two meal services on the LAX-SYD flight... one about an hour after departure (which we opted to skip), and then a long hiatus until what was a reasonably full hot breakfast for us at about 4:30 AEST (2 hours out from Sydney).

Hope this helps - let me know if you need anything else.

Cheers,
Matt.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer Matt! I'll be in PE although hoping for a J upgrade with points. :)
Looks like we'll be well fed!

Thanks for those. It's looking better than QF93 last week where I was successful with an upgrade so I'm liking my chances so far.
