Qatar Airlines upgrade

Good morning..looking for some advice


I am flying business class on Qatar Airlines next week from Singapore - Doha - London then returning via Rome - Doha - Singapore. A traveling companion is joining me but has purchased an economy class ticket. We are both Qantas and Qatar Airlines FF members.


Is there a way to request an upgrade to business class for her on all or some or some of the legs using points etc, and is it possible for us both to gain access to the Qatar Airlines lounges prior to departure ?

Guesting a visitor to a lounge is usually based on status, IME a business class ticket does not grant guest lounge access........what status are you with the FF programs?

With a business class ticket you can access the al Mourjan lounge which is the nice one but you can't take a guest with you regardless of yours or their status.

if you or they have One world sapphire or emerald (eg gold or platinum wth QF or QR) then you can get into the business class lounge with a guest if OWS or first class lounge if OWE with guest even if flying economy. These lounges are completely different from the business Al Mourjan lounge and First Al Safwa lounges for 1st class pax.

If your friend has Q credits (gold with QR or above) she may use them for the lounge or to upgrade to business if has enough.

If QR business is undersold they may send out emails with a fixed amount to pay to get to business. No bidding. Alternatively could she pay for business?

If she has QR points or enough of these she could apply for an upgrade. Or could top up her points with SPG points to transfer to QR? You cannot use QF points ... Unless you found reward flights in business with your QF points on your routes and she cancelled her economy ticket.

I dont know of any other options.

I had a guest in economy recently and took them to the First class lounge, we had a long layover so I dived into Al Mourjan for a look see and a bite then back to the other lounge. The food in First class lounge was the same as Al Mourjan but maybe a couple less options or instead of Thai salad in small individual bowls to take was in one big bowl to scoop out. The alcohol options on offer are significantly less but found some small private couches to crash out on for a while.

if you have a really long layover and want a hotel or swim, spa go to the airport hotel. I didn't as for some reason Ihad 2 hr layover in my head - but it was 7. And my guest didn't want to go to the hotel.

A family member travelled QR economy SYD-DOH-LHR last week. He was offered cash upgrade to business abt 2 weeks beforehand, $1445 SYD-DOH and $1041 DOH-LHR. She declined. His flight was chockers, so perhaps oversold and looking to push some bodies from Y to J.

My partner and I were both upgraded to J from our O class tickets for the ADL-DOH leg of our trip due to economy being oversold. My boarding pass said QF Lounge invite on it so I’m guessing they were using OW status as the decision criteria? Nevetheless, complete unexpected surprise and great start to our trip. My partner’s Boarding pass said AMVL?
