Quick question... I think I know the answer but I'm hoping I'm wrong. If I travel SYD-BNE-ROK which includes a Qantaslink sector on a Dash 8 (Q400), does that mean as a Qantas Club member I'm not entitled to any additional baggage allowance. Am I limited to 20kg? And does that have to be in one bag? Or do I still get the additional allowance?

Also while I'm asking, on my last few ROK-BNE-SYD flights my bags haven't been tagged Priority. Is this not a membership benefit when flying Qantaslink, or are the Rockvegas staff just getting lazy?

Thanks

It would appear that your bags should be tagged Priority or Business and by the wording on the QF website a maximum of 1 piece limited to 20kgs on the Dash 8s.

Priority baggage handling & allowances

Your baggage will be Priority or Business* tagged when you travel on Australian and New Zealand domestic flights marketed and operated by Qantas or QantasLink.^

As a Qantas Club member you also receive an additional baggage allowance when flying on a Qantas marketed and operated flight.^ You will receive an additional 10kg (22lb) allowance or one extra piece on the USA route.# Keep in mind that size and weight limits still apply for baggage on all flights.+

* When you are travelling domestically in Business Class or if you have Platinum or Gold Frequent Flyer membership.
^ You must be travelling on a Qantas aircraft with a Qantas flight number.
+ There is a maximum weight of 32kg for any one piece of baggage (First and Business class) and 23kg (Economy) on all Qantas flights and a maximum of one piece at 20kg on QantasLink Dash 8 flights (excluding travel to/from Lord Howe Island and Mount Hotham which is 14kg). Qantas Club extra baggage allowance is not additional to Platinum, Gold or Silver Frequent Flyers' extra baggage allowance.
# Excludes QantasLink services operated by Dash 8 aircraft.

If you are connecting on to a QF flight from the Qantaslink flight, then it should be tagged priority

If you are on QFlink only, then there is no priority handling of luggage I believe. It all just goes in together.. then again with most QF links only having max 50ish passengers, I find luggage reclaim to be quick anyway

In my experience, and according to the QF website, I have had luggage tagged priority/business on Qantaslink link only flights. Whether there is any priority handling of luggage is another matter.

Yep, every time I've flown on a QFLink flight it has had the tags, however when you hit a port such as ZNE or PBO it all comes out on one big long trolley, so there's no such thing as priority handling :D

And even smaller trolleys when getting off at places like BCI, NAA, BLT. Sometimes they just carry, or wheel, the bags from the hold to the terminal. That is if you can call a building with one small room a terminal.

My experience is it doesn't matter whether the baggage is tagged or not - it is random or luck if your baggage is loaded in a priority way. I have flown J from LAX and my business tagged bag was the first business tagged bag out - 20 minutes into the unloading! With QFLink - get to know the check-in staff - they will try to look after you if you treat them like human beings

I would have thought that, as you transfer directly from another QF or QL flight, you get the larger of the 2 bag limits. Therefore you should be able to take 30kg onto the Dash 8. If you were to take just a Dash 8 then you would get a flat 20kg.

Doesn't that apply on International flight, where if you fly for example PER- SIN on QF and then transfer to a BA SIN - LHR, you get to take your QC or WP bonus weight allocation on the BA flight.

There is a specific exclusion for Dash 8 flights in the terms and conditions I posted earlier in the thread

I don't know whether in reality Qantas turns a blind eye for Dash 8 flights if part of a long haul trip or RTW itinerary.

You will more than likely get away with it in the example you provided above. But how about the other way around if travelling BA LHR-SIN and then QF SIN-PER? You have basically lost your QC or Platinum/Gold extra baggage allowance as BA is your first carrier and unlikely to honour your Qantas baggage allowances.

Thanks guys. Ended up just checking the one piece, figured its not worth the risk. Given all my ROK-BNE sectors of late have been full I'd imagine they might be a bit cough with the luggage limits. Makes it hard when trying to relocate 1 suitcase at a time though!

I'll just have to keep on the ROK guys about the tags I guess. I'm a bit put off with Qantas about it though. I sent a very lightly worded email to them about it (not expecting anything really, just thought they might pass on the word to ROK) and they just ignored it. Shame... I'd always had pretty high regard for Qantas' customer service.

In Jan. I paid my very first excess on carry on luggage flying from bne-roma. I had arrived 2 days earlier on int'l flt. into bne with the allowed two suitcases, one carry on and one shoulder bag. The ck-in person @ Bne. said she recalculated my 2 suitcase weight so I wouldn't be charged excess but wasn't able to do anything abt. the carry on. Just as well, I sent off two boxes by mail to home address before ck.-in. :) I must have known something that I didn't really know.

I'm currently working in small town that has QF dash-8 and I was advised @ last ck-in Feb. that only one suitcase and carry on has to be weighed.

My experience is that this is so for the CBR/SYD flights I sometimes get as part of a bigger trip. I flew BNE/ROK/BNE last winter on a Dash-8 and had no trouble with luggage.

However, I suspect that if I was taking longer sectors, or there were more pax, then things might tighten up considerable.

As mentioned, there is a specific exclusion, so QF is within their rights to be strict about it if they want to. Or need to. When you get down to it, there's only so much one of these things can cram in and lift into the air.

My strategy is always to be sweet to the staff. This brings its own rewards.
