Qantas, AusPost seal $1.4bn deal to tackle online shopping

Australia Post and Qantas have struck a $1.4 billion deal that will see the airline introduce three new Airbus freighters to its network to help meet Australia's surging demand for online shopping.

The new seven-year agreement continues the two companies' former $500 million freight

Under the agreement, Australia Post will continue to have access to Qantas' dedicated freighter airline network, along with priority access to belly space on 1500 passenger flights.

Qantas will also invest in three new Airbus A321P2F aircraft, former passenger jets which have been converted into cargo jets, which boast a holding capacity of 208 cubic metres and can ship nearly 28 tonnes.

Compared to the airlines' existing Boeing 737 cargo planes, each of these new aircraft will have an increased capacity of nine tonnes and are due to enter the fleet in October next year.

Qantas will be the first in the world to operate the popular A321 as a cargo plane, with chief executive Alan Joyce saying the expansion was essential to keep up with Australia's love for online shopping.

In expanding its deal with Australia Post, Qantas has continued its fight with competing airline Virgin for a hold on the Australian freighting market.

Australia Post's contract remains by far the most lucrative, however, with the national postal service facilitating 82 per cent of the country's e-commerce and delivering some three billion items a year.

Did AJ just make an order for kangaroo-tailed aircraft? Granted it's for cargo, but still... Baby steps! :p

Was going to post this a couple of weeks ago but we were told to keep tight lipped on it until the announcement was made. I believe the aircraft being converted are currently in use by JQ and the possibility of another 3 being converted in the coming years especially when SWZ is completed and we can fly in and out of Sydney 24hrs. The SYD curfew causes all sorts of issues currently so would be nice to be free of that. Startrack will be the major beneficiaries of these changes with Premium airfreight numbers going through the roof

Interesting, JQs oldest 321s are only 2008 deliveries (versus 2004 for the 320s and 2002 for Qantas 787s)

But they will bet getting a lot of 321neo LR and XLR over the coming years.
- 18 321neo LR between mid-2020 and 2022
- 36 321neo XLR (likely split Jetstar and Qantas) from mid-2023

Ah. Hadn't clicked through. Both delivered 2000 Aero Lloyd, then went to Spirit before Jetstar.
Makes more sense then for those two.

I’m still thinking Aust post will continue to treat Cairns deliveries to interstate as second class and arrive to southern stares 2/3 days longer even if sent Express post. Cairns is a major city and should not be treated as regional, what you think Mr OZ post?

Can only vouch for the ADL service but all the FNQ freight and post goes out each night on the freighter. Sounds like AP don’t run a daily freight service out of there though which is strange as they would have the capacity to do so as Startrack run a daily air freight service out of CNS, ROK, GLT, TSV and MKY

The Cairns mail exchange said mail goes out each night and is sorted in Brisbane so one day lost, taking express post to local PO another day lost, yet the cost of Aust Poat Express Post satchel however is same as those in cities pay, it wrong.

I don’t know how their system works for post up there but know that the air freight goes out nightly so I just assumed they would tag on to that freighter
