Hi All

Newbie to this site so apologies if this has already been covered or if i'm in the wrong section:

Just booked an American Airlines return basic economy flight Houston - Miami to tip my Qantas Status into the next tier. Using the calculator Qantas advise 15 status points one way for discount economy. I'm assuming AA basic economy = QF discount economy?

Thanks in advance!

You need to look at SC, not status points.
Qantas points earn and SC earn are different.
SC or Status Credits earnings, help you climb the QF status ladder, while QP or Qantas Points don't.
Pedantic I know.

Bugger .... too good to be true. It was about 60% cheaper than economy. A lesson learned for sure

If you want you can upgrade to a higher fare class by paying the difference, just call up AA reservations. No extra fees other than the fare difference.

Yes, we were booked for one of these flights ex SanDiego ( without an explanation from our travel agent) was advised that it was an ineligible class after claiming the oversight....will be more explicit next time when booking internal US flights

Thanks for all the advice guys, we have upgraded to main cabin for a little extra. AA is not like Qantas where you get screwed big time for a change in fare, just paid the difference. But then again they screw you everywhere else .. checked baggage, boarding groups, etc and service is 3 star at best. Slowly learning the ropes of being an Aussie living in the US!

Just called AA to pay extra to move from Fare B to Fare O (Main Cabin) and was told this is not possible. Can anyone else shed light if they have recently been able to do this?

Hang up and call again? I’ve not done that but I’ve done plenty of economy to first upgrades and they were easy - didn’t even pay a change fee, just the fare difference.

Perhaps O was sold out and you need a higher fare class? O is the cheapest class outside of basic economy.

Generally domestic B fares on AA are unchangeable, not even to upfare into Business/First.* I suspect @Demo either made the change within 24 hours of booking or was very lucky.

*AA do allow up-faring from discount economy fares to a higher cabin with no change fee, just fare difference.
