Qantas results and fleet upgrade

I wonder if "a new flat seat" means a redesigned J seat, or the Skybed MKII...

Ausbt article is quoting Qantas as saying that J seats will be an all new design.

Can't see Skybed Mk2 efficiently occupying space in a 330.

It's nearly two years before the refurbishment is due to commence.

Spin.

B767 soldier on until 2015 (personally I like them anyway!), B734s gone by end of this year, no word on JQ giving up A330's, the A333 and 332 reconfigs starting in late 2014. Good news on additional B738s and more B717's says FIFO charter and resource markets doing well. So not all bad news. Will be really intersting to see the $ numbers.

Subtext is: "We are starting to reconfigure our already outdated international product in 2014 so that it matches our competitors product that they already have now. Despite the market reaction we will try to sell our 2+3+2 Starclass A330 product as Business Class in transcon Aus services until the A332 reconfig is done, despite now knowing that VA have better A330s on the way. More domestic capacity required with the retirement of B767 fleet. Internationally - QFi is having its a#$% handed to it by competitors so the A332 and A333s are due for heavy and maintenence so lets stick QFi with those costs, after all we can't have JQ wearing those costs! All this is in reaction to poor fleet choices in the past as we invested in "hub busting" aircraft and now only have one capacity constrained hub (SYD), and we are still awaiting the B787 which we hope and pray will change all the known laws of economics when its introduced into service with JQ. Domestically - despite having problems with capacity/congestion and high labour costs in our hub of SYD we are going down the road of frequency and not capacity."

Good results overall, and positive initiatives. :) I am disappointed a little though with the timeframe of the A330 refurbs, late 2014 is a long time away! and 2nd disappointment is there was no more clarity given on the Asia improvements announced a few weeks ago other than retimings.

Starting late 2014....yawn, I'll be flat out sleeping on a competitors flat bed by then.

They dont really need flatbed for transcon, but I guess it allows flexibility to transfer those planes for international ops.

I also believe they will mask the refurbishment so QFi has to pay for the ex JQ birds we get.

I would think a more logical option is to give all the starclass A332s to JQ and configure the 787s properly for QFi?

Im probably confusing the issue with logic.

Awesome!

Though if the new J product is game changing by the end of 2014, they might need to consider upgrading the A380 too!

I thought the idea was that JQ would hand the A330's back when/as they2 got their 787's, but as that looks incredibly unlikely this year, perhaps that'll cause delays handing them back, and thus the reconfigs can't happen until then. Of course, no idea why they can't start on the ones they have now, but by the time they get the others back the product would be outdated, so maybe they're just going to wait it out so every aircraft can have the best product. For now though, we'll have to suck it up.

It was noted elsewhere that because JQ is getting the 787's, there's all sorts of penalties that Boeing has to pay, however if it were QF, they wouldn't.

Plus, we've already had the A380 hiccups, do we really need 787 ones too? Leave JQ to figure out that nightmare!

Amen to that, CX will have introduced a even better new J product by then ;)

Or maybe QF will introduce the same/a better one.

Confused - haven't they just upgraded their 767's (at a cost I assume) and now they're retiring them next year?

No they just did a refresh of them.. it wasn't an upgrade as such.
