Fuel Surcharge Change - QF/EK

MEDIA HEADS-UP: QF/EK fuel
surcharges – Qantas will today announce a change to
international fuel surcharges on the joint Qantas and Emirates network. This is
part of an ongoing process of alignment as part of our broader partnership.
These changes primarily impact Frequent Flyer redemption bookings in Economy –
these customers will see an average cost reduction of around 30 percent (to the
surcharge only) across the joint QF/EK network. There’s
no change to commercial fares on the joint network (as these have mostly already
been aligned), no change to the number of points
required for redemption flights themselves and no change to fuel surcharges on
any other parts of the Qantas network (e.g. flights to the Americas or South
Africa). These changes apply to tickets issued from 1 July 2013

It was too good to last!

Qantas and Emirates are aligning their fuel surcharges on frequent flyer award tickets, closing a loophole which let travellers avoid hundreds of dollars in Qantas fuel surcharges by using their points to book a codeshare Emirates flight.

Adopting a 'meet in the middle' approach, from Qantas will lower its fuel surcharges on the joint Qantas-Emirates network, while Emirates will raise theirs. The changes apply to tickets issued from 1 July 2013.

The good news is that Qantas fuel surcharges will drop, so at least that is something to smile about!

The good news is that Qantas fuel surcharges will drop, so at least that is something to smile about!

I like this for QFF, though such a shame it doesn't apply across the entire fuel surcharge spectrum.

It still makes premium redemptions pretty high; not sure if Y is more palatable with the reduction.

On the other hand, the EK Skywards community is going to come after us (the QFFers) - we are in big trouble now.......

They came after our award seats in big numbers so I guess fair is fair (or is that fare is fare )

A good start in my opinion, thanks to our Brazilian freinds and the disruptive game changing internet. Once China Southern and other airline competitors get improvements in schedule and hard and soft products we can expect to see more downward pressure on airfares and fuel fines....

Did the announcement above say "There’s no change to commercial fares on the joint network" so if paying cash for a fare that would mean the .br fare is still better than trying to buy a QF seat wouldn't it???

Pretty transparent when they change fuel surcharges just for routes EK share and not for any of the other routes that they have been dragged into this... You'd think its still the same amount of fuel that premium passengers are using as well so why didn't they get similar reductions but i guess QFstill like their cash grab...

Maybe time to book some cheap EK redemptions while we can...

The point I am making is that the delta will drop now, as the fees are lower, not saying it will be no longer worthwhile!

Yes casanova - don't you know that jet fuel put on a plane in SYD magically becomes more expensive to burn when flying to some destinations than others, sometimes irrespective of distance? Apparently the fuel appreciates in value while in the air depending on which destination? :shock:

Will be interesting to see how EK manage these changes. If EK have indeed dropped their base fares and raised their fuel surcharges then that is another nail in the coffin in the argument that fuel fines have anything to do with the price of jet fuel.

I was excited to see the title of this thread til I saw the table...all those points earning to send MrsStoopid to UK in J will still cost the same fuel fine. And cut out that leg via BKK she wanted too.

I have a paid 26 sector itinerary that doesn't commence until August, incorporating LHR-xDXB-SIN, SIN-xMEL-BNE, BNE-xSYD-SIN, SIN-DXB-LHR flights. It needs re-issue (because AA have changed one of my internal US flights that's also part of the itinerary). Should I ask the TA to hold off re-issue until after July 1 so I get refunded the difference? Or is it only on points redeemed flights?

This whole fuel surcharge thing really annoys me. Price should be built in, on paid and redemption bookings.

Ditto. The fuel surcharge was intended as a short-term measure to handle skyrocketing fuel prices after certain wars in certain countries. It's become a long-term price gouge, and governments world-wide don't have the nads to force its repeal now that oil prices have stabilised.

I don't understand how fuel prices can be more expensive for someone in business/first than for someone in economy! Doesn't everyone have an equal share in fuel consumption?

If these are actually "fuel surcharges", they should reflect the cost of fuel in some way and be the same price for everyone. This is just price gouging and an attempt to gain more revenue from those using points to travel in (mainly higher) classes.

I'm totally with you on this.

Their pricing gurus will see it like this: if you're paying for a premium cabin, price isn't the reason you're there - so we can charge you more.
Additionally, they'll justify it like this: business/first class seats are heavier, and therefore have an increased effect on fuel burn to fill that seat.

The whole fuel surcharge thing makes me ****ing sick.
