Morning all!

Just a quick one about whether or not there are any significant price fluctations with relation to the Qantas Red e-deal fares? Want to book on this fare as it will allow me to apply for a points upgrade on my flight to the US in October.

Cheers, Andrew.

:D

There can be yes as there are about 5 fare buckets included in "red e-deal".

Correct me if I'm wrong though, but I didn't think international red e-deal fares were upgradeable? (promos excluded).

I didn't think red e-deals were upgradeable on international without a promotion being applied.
and yes they will vary significantly but October is good time to travel, should be able to fly QF to the USA for the $1200-$1400 mark, dunno if those fares are released this early though.

As always the fare rules from point of departure to destination will be applicable, in the case of the OP, fares from Australia to North America normally are not upgradable if purchased in Red e deal or Sale categories.

Bookings - Fare Types

Red e-deals are upgradable for other places, for instance ex new Caldonia to Asia, ex NZ to Europe etc

Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Points and Status credits may be earned on this fare
  • Flight Upgrade Awards are not eligible on all Red e-Deal fares.Flight Upgrades can only be redeemed on Qantas operated flights.
  • This fare is classed as Discount Economy when Status credits are earned or when points are redeemed for a Flight Upgrade Award.
  • Points and Status credits are not accrued when travelling on Qantas codeshare flights operated by Jetstar.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this means that as long as it is a QF ticket on QF metal, I will be able to upgrade?

It says the fare is not eligible for upgrades, and if it was, it would need to be QF metal.

Ok, I've done a few dummy bookings to check timings and such using the red e-deal fares and that's what I'm given at the confirmation screen as well. I'll assume it can be upgraded unless it says otherwise on the confirmation page I think.

Back to my original query, I was more looking at whether I should buy the fare when I get paid next in a fortnight, or wait a few months with cash on standby for a cheaper price for the red e-deal.

Cheers.

You cannot upgrade red e deals ex Aus to the USA, you would be better off with a sale fare, it there is an upgrade promo they will be upgradable as well.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'll keep my eye out for an upgrade promo and keep my powder dry.

By the time upgrade promotions are around, the "cheap" fares are usually much more expensive. These promotions are frequenlty run during peak economy travel seasons- i.e. school holidays, easter and christmas.

Your options are
1. buy red e-deal now, check it's booking class and hope for a promotion if it is N, O or Q (are there more non-upgradeable classes?). Be lower in the lottery than other who have purchased and requested prior to you
2. buy red e-deal and forget about an upgrade
3. buy an upgradeable fare now and get into the lottery much earlier
4. wait for an upgrade promotion and then buy the ticket. This will likely make you one of the lowest in the lottery and the red e-deals may well be sold out or more expensive.

Thanks for the advice. I'd prefer to give myself the highest possible chance of getting an upgrade so getting into the lottery earlier would be more ideal. If only I just had the spare coin to afford the full fat business fair haha

For the US, I wait for a decent Premium sale and then upgrade to business. It's often quite close enough to an upgradable economy fare.

However, not all red-e-deals are the same - for other destinations it pays to check out the Red-e-Deals, i.e. Australia to Asia quite often has V-class fares as Red-e-Deals which are upgradable.

I don't believe time of entry into "the lottery" has any specific bearing on upgrade probabilty with QFF these days.
