SMH has reported that Qantas is raising its international fuel surcharges to $145 one-way for flights to Europe/UK; $115 for the Americas and Africa; and $75 for Asia/Pacific.

Fare rise: Qantas raises fuel surcharge

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere. I couldn't see it anywhere already.

As would be expected BA has also increased it's fuel surcharge.
BA response to high fuel prices

03 Feb, 2011

Effective for tickets issued from 19 February 2011, British Airways will increase its YQ fuel surcharge on flights between Australia, Singapore, Bangkok and London.

For tickets issued in Australia from 19 February 2011 the YQ Fuel Surcharge on direct flights between Australia and the UK will be increased from to AUD145 per direction.

This means that a round trip journey to London from Sydney will attract a YQ surcharge of AUD290.

The level is the same if you have a stopover in SIN or BKK. This rate is applicable on all direct BA flights over SIN & BKK
For Flights between Australia and SIN & BKK the Fuel Surcharge will increase to AUD75 each direction.

Issued by British Airways Australia Sales

Why not? Everything else is going up why not fuel surcharges.

Must be due for a credit card surcharge increase as well....

Brent crude hit $100.00 a barrel the other day on the back of worries about the Egypt situation so I guess we could be looking at another sustained period of high aviation fuel prices.

now JQ wont be applying surcharge ... they will be adjusting fares ... it will be very interesting to see how QF stock prices react to this.

Does this mean that if my flights in May are not issued (QF still processing paper ticket) before the specified date I'll get hit with the extra +++?

An already expensive airline is now, more expensive. But that is Qantas for you. As Asian and Middle East airlines take their market share, they like Nero just fiddle.

Singapore Airlines also increased their surcharge

Singapore Airlines said:
Singapore Airlines will increase its fuel surcharge for tickets issued on or after 27 January 2011, as a result of the recent sharp and sustained escalation in the price of jet fuel.

The price of jet fuel is now above USD110 per barrel.

The new levels shown below will apply to Singapore Airlines and SilkAir flights. They represent an increase of between USD3 and USD27 per sector, depending on the distance and class of travel.

That makes Australia/NZ to Europe one-way fuel surcharge USD$216

That is fine but when the crude oil price drops back down to $80 a barrel will the fuel surcharge increase be rolled back? Not quite....

That's when the price of a barrel of the "fuel used in airplanes" will be mentioned as not having dropped.
I might try to find a graph of that price over the last few years.

When fuel surcharges go up it is because the price of crude has gone up. When the price of crude drops the fuel surcharges are not rolled back as they have hedged their crude at higher prices. So QF and other airlines hedge their crude prices at the higher levels but not when crude prices are lower.

I have an older one that was posted on AFF which showed something like 8 increases in a row without a decrease. I have no idea how to post so someone else may be able to post.

What I mean is that when crude goes down qantas will justify keeping the surcharge up by saying the price of jet fuel is still high. Sorry I forget the cynical and sarcastic smiley.

But more seriously I would've thought they hedge against the price of a barrel of jet a1 (or whatever it is) not crude. I recall hearing in the last week that a barrel of jet fuel was about $180 or so
