I'm looking at a PE flight SYD - JFK but want to visit San Franscisco and LA on the way over. Does anyone know if it's possible to fly into SFO and then onwards to New York from LAX.

I can see the flights are available and that I'm allowed a stopover but I'm not sure what the rules are about this sort of thing.

Sure can, this is from the multi-city tool on the QF website. IME it's not worth the hassle of trying to add an economy flight from SFO-LAX in the same booking, when booking in PE as you will just get errors. Just book a cheap O/W with AA/VX/DL whoever you like. As you will have time in LAX connections aren't an issue.



Came in at $3450 for those dates with the current special, might differ with your dates etc.

You can often add an economy flight for SFO-LAX for ~$100 onto the same ticket, if you must stopover in LAX before heading to NYC.

Stopover rules:

SO.STOPOVERS

  1 STOPOVER PERMITTED IN EACH DIRECTION
     LIMITED TO 1 FREE AND 1 AT AUD 100.00.
       1 FREE IN MEL/SYD/BNE/LAX/DFW/SFO
       1 IN MEL/SYD/BNE/LAX/DFW/SFO AT AUD 100.00.
     APPLIES PER ADULT AND CHILD.
         NOTE -
          INF PAYS 10PC OF ADULT FEES

Putting the economy segment SFO/LAX in the QF international ticket is likely to be worth it if you don't have any status with AA as you'd otherwise be paying for baggage fees on a separately booked SFO-LAX ticket.

However, you can save the $100 by visiting SFO, going to NYC, then visiting LAX on the way back as the stopover charge above wouldn't apply then, as you'd be using the "1 free stopover in each direction".

Yes of course it's possible, just not very easy online with QF. I was just suggesting it would be simpler separately, as from my experience the QF engine online is not great at handling Y sectors in multi-stop W bookings.
I just tried putting in the SFO-LAX sector, and if you want >24 hours in LAX then it jumps to $5300. But you might get this down with further searching, or by calling up...

You'd definitely need to call up or see an agent. Depending on number of passengers it can be a substantial saving...
