Australian Business Traveller article about several new ultra long haul flights:
  • Sydney to Chicago,
  • Melbourne to Dallas
  • Brisbane to Dallas
  • Perth to London

On the
Dreamliner's Boeing 787 with a 236 passenger setup.

Using the Domestic terminal in Perth is an interesting idea. I guess this opens up a few interesting options. Any options to the USA that avoids Los Angeles is good by me.

Long flight in a tight seat. Disagree about LAX, now my preferred entry to the US with the new work completed at TBIT.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

Actually I prefer TBIT especially after recent renovations. The auto passport kiosks have made immigration a lot faster because non English speaking passengers can use them in their native language and it does a lot of the manual work that an agent used to do.

The flight into DFW gets in to late to really take advantage of all the morning onward flights in my view. Additionally there are a lot of flights heading off transpacific to OZ from TBIT on the way home so in the event of an unserviceable airline at least I have a chance of hopping onto another flight.

More Qantas-B787 hype and piffle. Qantas had its big B787 event last week and didn't announce firm plans for routes; come back to us AusBT when you have something new to tell us.

I'm another fan of LAX nowadays.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

I really cannot see this as a long term sector. Sure fuel prices are still low but that IMO is still a short term position. Love it or hate it the alliance with EK has given QFFers better options to connect on that side of the planet rather than transiting in PER, that will take a lot of infrastructure work before the single QF/EK/Oneworld terminal will work (eg.SYD had the same idea as well).
Anyway my preference for long haul flights is still the A380, then 747 for nostalgia than any twin engine plane from Boeing.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

18+ hours without a break in a cramped Y seat? No thanks.

I'll take the larger seats on the A380 with a shower and stretch of my legs half way through in Dubai every time.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

+1 this is marketing spin, 737 economy from the east coast in many cases then 787 economy for 17 hours? nice idea but where's the market for it?

But EK does not have a shower for lowly Y passengers (inflight)

Perhaps what levelnine means is that a layover would allow an opportunity for people to deplane and shower or otherwise break up their journey as they wish.

Yes!. Connecting is not necessarily less attractive than a long range nonstop. It does have benefits.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

Biggest thing for me here is - are we going to finally have a decent F lounge at PER? :)

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

As there is not going to be an F cabin on the B787, I suspect it may be like the new QF lounge in SIN and BKK. And so would not be surprised it will just be one combined lounge

The ABT article has nothing that hasn't been discussed before. It's a re-hash following the 787 event last week.

Yes, that is what I meant. As a Gold/Platinum flying Y, the A380 with a DXB stopover is a vastly superior option in my opinion.

There are worse ways to spend a couple of hours in layover than in the business/first class EK lounges at DXB. :)

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

QF corporate came in today about other matters, floated the Perth/London route idea, with a one terminal transfer in the QF precinct at PER. As we all fly business class, they got a lot of positive feedback - our CEO especially said he'd rather transfer in PER and get the long flight over and done with in one go. Suspect the 'enjoyment of the Dubai lounges' as celebrated by the avid AFF's on here, would be pretty low on most companies radars when it comes to choosing flights in the 'real' world.

I agree. If QF open a half decent lounge in PER I think it would be a very attractive option to LHR, especially in J. I'd happily do a SYD-PER Domestic to connect to it.

A brilliant way to fly a truly great J hard product for the solo traveller. The A380 Skybeds just don't cut it anymore, were out of date years ago.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

No more upgrades to F?:)

I wonder if this gets wings whether it will allow QF to reduce A380 arrivals into LHR from 2 to one. So either QF1 or 2 could turn around at DXB during the low activity periods and pivot to other regions such as Asia.

But I suspect that, and the F cabin on the A380 will be changing.
