On Friday for the third time ever I left something on a plane - my iPad. The other events were a book on a VA domestic flight - returned, and a jacket on a QF international flight - lost. Clearly remember starting to open my bag to put the iPad away, seriously don't know what disrupted me, perhaps the lady asking to get her black and white bag down. Realised the error at 10pm Friday night. Jump on the Qantas website to check for lost property contacts - That when around in circles a little bit but finally got to this page, Contact Us | Qantas

It was pretty encouraging to read that there may be 7 day baggage services:

If your question is still not answered, contact Baggage Services within Australia on 1300 306 980 (damaged, delayed or missing baggage only) between 7am and 9pm AEDT, 7 days per week.

That was quickly tempered to read that wasn't exactly the case for Adelaide:

Adelaide (Domestic and International)
Opening Hours Mon-Fri 7.30am to 10.30am

Monday to Friday for 3 hours a day - WTF! I called the number anyway, this got me through to an answering service asking me to leave a detailed description of the missing article. Left name, flight number, seat number and item details, expecting to have to chase up on Monday morning for 3 hours.

I was very happily surprised to have a call at 8:30 Saturday morning to say they've found an iPad, it came off the flight, black case with passcode required. Come to the airport to check it out. Great news Adelaide lost property is open 7 days a week, like Alice springs and Launceston. Even better news that it was my iPad.

Point of the thread:
1) yay! Massive thanks to Adelaide baggage staff, cleaners and crew of QF761 on 19 June.
2) call if you've lost something and leave a message. Don't be discouraged by the advertised hours.
3) Red Roo you might like to update the website to better reflect the situation.

Good to hear, I also (well my wife did) had a great lost item experience about a year ago.
She was going through OOL security and left her jacket in the scanning tray! Took her J class QF flight to Melb via Syd.
Only once back in MEL did she realise that her jacket was left in OOL. She called QF baggage services in OOL and the fantastic staff there went to OOL lost property retrieved the jacket and posted it to us (COD of course). Very happy.

I left my iPad behind a couple of months ago, coincidentally also at ADL. Rang the WP phone number and they got in touch with lost property when they opened the following morning. There waiting for me when I left a couple of days later. Great service.

I left my iPad on flight back from london QF2. called lost baggage every day for a week. Nothing.
Then one agent got the idea to see where that plane went next. DBX. nothing. LHR. bingo. Not very thorough cleaners.

They wouldn't fly the iPad back. So I had to get a courier.

From LHR? Good grief!

That's probably what happened to my jacket.

A mate mentioned, on Facebook, having to get a train back to Fiumicino to pick up an iPad.

Hopefully you get a better response than i did, i brought this up with Qantas a few years ago. Crazy how their website has had this incorrect information for years. Unfortunately i didn't get my brand new jacket back :-(

I've done the silliness and left an iPad on a domestic flight on Monday. I called the FF desk and they gave me a number to call which is disconnected, so I found another number on the website which says they will only call back if they find the item. It's been three days and I've called them three times with not a peep so I'm getting a bit worried....

Which airport was your destination? I once left a kindle onboard. Fortunately it had been found and was with the baggage claim desk at that airport - who I called directly and was on my way to for a direct visit anyway (Canberra, so very easy to get to).

iPad is tricky as it could be confused by staff as a QF iPad and may have stayed onboard (if not pinched) for quite some time.

Yes, this flight had iPads and mine was in a red cover so I suspect it could have stayed there for a while and not been noticed. I got off in Sydney but the plane could now be anywhere between Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne by now. I might try ringing some airports...

Experienced lost iPad on flight to Townsville. Left in the seat pocket. I must say gave Qantas lost property a call and they required me to present to the airport lost property when coming back thru Townsville next. All I was asked date and time of my last flight. The person disappeared for about five minutes and brought back about 5 different contraptions. One of them was mine.
Phew!! Battery still 20%. The find your ipad was disable but will be enabling it now.

Find your iPad is enabled in my case but flight mode is also turned on :-(

There would be a way to know the specific aircraft you were on and where it then went. (others on this form will be able to help - though might need to ask a query in a new thread?). But yes then try ringing some of those airports. One plus may be that some pax picked it up, thought it was a QF one and on realizing not (or that it didn't work) handed it over to the crew. But there's a risk it's still onboard. Or a risk airport X has 5 such ipads and won't try them all for you.

Not helpful I know, but good luck.

If I lost something (left aboard) I would contact Qantas. With basically any other airline I wouldn't even bother. In other words, they are good.

Oh yes flight mode won't help. Maybe little point in enabling then?

Well, I got it back, but it was an interesting experience.

Firstly I rang the Sydney number and got a recorded voice saying they'd only call back if they found it. Since I left it in a seat pocket that day I figured there was a fair chance they'd find it. Heard nothing the next day so rang and left another message. Heard nothing the next day so called the FF desk and they said try again someone might answer. So I tried again, left another message.

With the help of the plane tracker I saw it had been to Melbourne and Perth. At Melbourne I left a message and they called right back, said sorry they don't have it but if I speak to someone in Sydney they could track where it went. But she was pretty certain it would have been taken off the plane at Sydney. I called Perth, they answered, went and had a look straight away and came back and said sorry, no sign of it.

As I was heading back through Sydney today I dropped in at lost property. No one there for 5 minutes, someone wandered by, asked if they could help, asked me to fill in a form with all my details. He wandered out the back, someone poked their head through the door and said they'll be back later. Five minutes later he comes back, says come over here to another door and he'll have a look. He asked for the description (forms left on the desk not even looked at) of my iPad, brings me a different one, asks if that's it, I say no. He says, we probably don't have it then. I say I'd be surprised if it wasn't here since it was in the seat pocket when I got off the plane and I'd already spoken to people at Perth and Melbourne where the plane went that day. Ok, I'll have another look he says, and hey presto, he finds it. It was in a very distinctive red cover so would have stood out.

I had to punch in my pin to prove it was mine, and I mentioned that I had find my iPad on, but flight mode was on so it wouldn't work. At which point he shows me that you can disable flight mode without the pin. So, if he knows that, why did he not do it when it was handed in, so that I would be able to find that it was at the airport...?

The motto seems to be, don't expect them to ring you, go to the desk and be persistent.

Must just be Sydney. My experience was very good with Adelaide. Your phone calls to MEL and PER also sound like they were very good.
