A Qantas 737-800 was forced to turn back to Sydney airport today after a its de-icing equipment failed.

Flight QF 922 was 90 minutes into its flight from Sydney to Cairns when the captain announced the plane would be returning to Sydney, which was the nearest major airport that was free of cloud.

Icy conditions can cause problems! Would have been a non-issue if the weather was normal.

Smooth air all the way this afternoon coming back from TSV via OOL to SYD.

Plenty of cloud about but no worries on either flight (with DJ):D

The interesting issue to me is the decision to return to Sydney. I expect due to wet conditions in Brisbane and further north yesterday, so descending through any rain/cloud could result in icing which could be a problem with the particular fault they had experienced.

Sure it seems to be trivial. But then given that the same aircraft is reported as having the same issue 2 days in a row, I think that is mildly interesting.

Is it the same aircraft :?:

If so, and I have seen this sort of thing many times, they will need to go further with their fault finding.

It was VH-VXR yesterday, so it'll be interesting to see which a/c it was today if it did happen again...

.

I'm not sure just repeating what has been reported.

It would be good to know that fault finding works the first time.

But I'm not native enough to think that is necessary all the time
