Thanks for the tip off. I have booked a US trip thru Q Holidays and though I can pay the final payment 30 days prior to departure it is "subject to price increases". As the current fare seems pretty good I will pay now to lock it in.

[FONT=&quot]What's 3% on a few grand when they are charging more than 3k difference on some flights l ask you?
A friend of mine just sent me this. He's a QF WP from half work/half SFSC travel. He's having doubts about keeping his QF WP status. Just getting to expensive to travel on QF for International.

But flying on CX gets you the same SCs and as WP still access to Flounges so why not go CX anyway and still keep your WP status?

Sorry, l guess l didn't make myself clear. He said that he's given up flying QF on international flights. 9 out of 10 times, cheaper elsewhere.
My bad.

Your mate is correct that Qantas SYD-HKG is more expensive, but the difference isn't 3K. It's more around 1K (and I know which one I'd choose ! :) )

The price comparison here is a discounted CX fare against a nearly full QF fare.

I think though that very few people actually pay the full Qantas charge (either due to a good TA with the right fares, or a good corporate discount), so the difference is probably nearly 0 when the two fares are compared.

I wonder if the situation is reversed HKG-SYD return?

In a post I made last week here I was talking of the same thing.

A return on TG in D Class PVG-BKK-BNE came out at AU$3125. Same dates on QF PVG-SYD-BNE also in D class priced up at AU$6205. It can't be argued that it's a shorter flight - PVG-BKK-BNE is 1000 miles longer.

So I'm getting the $3k difference too!

And as noted in that post - to book BNE-SYD-PVG return is AU$7783. $1500 difference in booking cost based on point of origin.

Many more examples of this and I will be struggling to requalify WP this year.

From memory QF did not reduce the price of airfares (sure they had some sales) on the mentioned routes during the recent economic crisis and now they are increasing airfares across the board?

The more I fly the more I realise that the QF product and service is not that good in general compared to other carriers flying the same routes. I think the time is right to give other airlines a chance.

Surely you are not thinking of giving up WP status and swapping to the dark side:?:

Time to ask DJ for a status match? :p

I wouldn't be jumping ship just yet.
Does DJ have lounges in every capital yet, and some?
Can you acure points on a world wide network, like Oneworld?
Do they have J Class?
Until someone like *Alliance or ST enter the Oz market, it maybe not worth jumping. Just pointing out that QF seems a little bit on the high side of $$$ sometimes. Can't really do much about it?

As a side note. I am looking at going to Europe next year. Around May/June for 1 month. It's only a few hundred more to do a RTW on a QF/BA combo. Long haul in whY. l'm going to get a sore bum + lots of hours in a whY seat. Oh well, guess we do it for the extra points.

Not giving up Platinum status yet. Well not when one can get it very cheaply with a couple of good status runs.

One of the best benefits of Platinum status is the anytime lounge access when flying on award tickets with Star Alliance carriers courtesy of Amex promotions. ;)

I do not have an issue with Qantas domestic. It is a far superior product to what is on offer from the other 3 domestic carriers.
