WORKCOVER has ordered Qantas to develop emergency procedures for its Sydney domestic terminal after finding the airline in breach of safety laws for failing to train or drill staff on what to do in a disaster.

As the federal government sharpens its focus on the threat of terrorism and seeks to strengthen aviation security, airport staff told the Herald they had not taken part in an emergency drill since 2001.

That’s a long time, but it can’t be that hard to tell people to head for the entrance, and not the planes in an emergency :p

Just as some random information: QANTAS is a self-insurer for work-cover so workcover are always all over their operations as such.

There were two improvement notices issued - 1 regarding Emergency Procedures and the other in relation to baggage handlers.

Qantas rapped over staff training - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

That is not technically correct (WorkCover "all over Qantas operations") - whilst self insurers are required to have a series of audits to review their OHSMS workcover inspectors from the SI-audit team are not and never can be "all over them".

It is reported internally that WorkCover NSW have less formal inspections of occupational health and safety systems within Qantas than they did five years ago.

I have been personally involved as an investigator on several matters (two extremely serious (critical risk) and WorkCover took an average of greater than 22 days to respond... Both SYD. In these matters also Qantas only undertook action following the reporting of the incidents by crew to W.Cover.

The most effective Qantas OHSMS improvements were achieved under the leadership of Ken Lewis (GGM Safety) - it has all gone downhill since he retired with major focus now unfortunately on cost as opposed to effective risk management.. hence deferred training.

That said they are probably no different than a myriad of other organisations in NSW..... Oh and don't mention the 4 fatalities with Insulation...:(

But those fatalities had nothing to do with workcover in any state. It was all garrett's fault,
But in NSW it is the employers fault unless they can prove innocence-hoist by his Parties own petard.

well someone needs to tell the Liberal party and the Mad Monk about the law in NSW, because all I've heard him say is that it is Garrett's fault.
