Qantas only credited me with Flexible Economy points and Status credits, despite me buying and flying Business.
One section of their web site calculator will only allow either discount economy or Flexible Economy, but further down it shows the below table.
Does anyone know why I am only the Flexible Economy points and Status credits

Unfortunately business and first flights on Malaysian Airlines only earn flexible economy points. From the qantas website
Flights booked in C, D, I , J and Z class will earn at Flexible Economy Frequent Flyer Earn Category, however will receive Malaysia Airlines Business Class service, and flights booked in A and F class will earn at Flexible Economy Frequent Flyer Earn Category, however will receive Malaysia Airlines First Class service.

This is confusing but correct. MH only give Flex Y for J flights.

You need to review the MH earnings table that is very clear on this.

This is correct earn for the Australia to Malaysia sector on MH. This information is buried on the QF website, so much so that I have to have it bookmarked to retrieve it. It is this information you need to use the calculator as it tells you the cabin equivalent with which you'll be credited, not the other way around as most probably think.

This is a confusing fail on the website and many people have hit this road bump. You can't unfortunately use the calculator and expect it to work out that partner earn on some routes is less than you'd expect. You have to know yourself what cabin to enter.

Hmm, I wonder whether having the details buried so deeply + a misleading points calculator is entirely ACL-compliant.

I haven't tried looking for the page without the bookmark for a long time but remember when I did it took a good 5 minutes, and I know what I'm looking for! What is also confusing are all the links to 'Eligible status credits' or something like that but most/all these just navigate to the lengthy FF general terms and conditions.

This complexity seems to become more and more the norm than the exception. Navigating Delta's Medallion program for non US residents flying on partner airlines can also be a lot of fun!!!

The earn catagories are two clicks from the calculator.

CLick two Malaysian logo.

Frequent Flyer - Flying Qantas and Partner Airlines - Flying with Qantas & Jetstar - Earning Qantas Points

The table at that link is pretty clear in showing malaysian

Flights between Australia

Europe*; New Zealand
and Malaysia, UK or
Europe*; and Malaysia
and UK, Europe* or
Middle East

Earn a maximum of flexible economy.

I find the calculator is pretty much correct when you select the correct airline. This is true of adelaide to KL which only shows valid earning options.

Thanks for all the answers.
Why do they have the table I attached in my original post when it is incorrect as far as Malayasian Airlines!
It is misleading and confusing.

That table is not incorrect, and not really even misleading (maybe slightly). Because the table correctly outlines the earning for each "Qantas earn category". The earn category for malaysian airlines is clearly listed in a separate table.
NB these are EARN categories, NOT cabin of service.

This table clearly shows there is no Business earning category for Malaysia airlines for flights between Australia and Malaysia.

Out of curiosity, who's decision is this anyway (Economy SC for a Business flight)? MH or QF?

I believe this is a QFF decision.

Previous to the current situation they did award J flying at some sort of "Business" SC's, but had restrictions on oz-Malaysia and Malaysia-London routes specifically where, IIRC, 50% earn was given. Clearly this was to push those who cared to preferred partner routings, or QF itself ideally to get to Europe. However, on routes where QF's own flights weren't going to be a factor, for example say SIN-KUL or something, they would be happy to give full credit. I think this was "enhanced" in the last year or so.

However, this is just an assumption - I have notthing to back this up with :)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I still feel that the current MH earn situation is because of the fallout from when their JV talks didn't work out. QF sponsored MH into oneworld as part of trying to setup a JV airline with MH hubbed out of KUL into Asia/China.

This fell apart, and then when QF revised earn rates, MH seemed to be the ugly step sister.

ooooh yes, I forgot all about that. That was the supposed all premium carrier at one point named Red something? Or am I thinking of yet another stupid idea? I had a feeling that was quite a few years ago though like maybe even before QF/EK?

At times there does seem to be spite involved between "partners" - I mean QF/CX were frenemies for quite some time and only recently does it seem that relations have thawed a little bit.

Qantas do not fly anywhere Internationally from Adelaide ( Jetstar Bali closest thing) thus to avoid going through Melbourne and changing planes MH to KL only option. Obviously a Qantas decision .

Yep, this is all related to the Emirates partnership hence flights from Australia to Asia and asia to europe getting the bad treatment

... after QF left MH standing at the altar, jilting them for EK.

MH has its own partnership with EK now...

But, I think a lot stemmed from neither airline having the ability to tip in the required capital. And as always, probably ego - which plays a bigger part in airline partnerships and alliances than many will admit.
