Was going to book 2 x Y JQ award seats CNS/DPS/CNS it's 57K Qantas points and fees of $503, going to JQ site for same dates its $593, so booking the flights using QFF points is such bad value. Considering the massive profits earned from the QFF program isn't it about time they reduced these exorbitant fees to an acceptable level?.

Using points makes much more sense for flying J than for flying Y on a lot of routes.

I concur with "mivy" points reedemptions are better for premium cabins and longer haul. that said I am springing an F redemption for my aged Mother flying EK in August AKL-BNE

This won't help you, but in a time like this I would take a screenshot of the QFF booking clearly showing dates and surcharges and then another of a paid booking showing the same thing, and send them both to QF Loyalty. Not saying they'd do anything about it, but quite often I'd bet they don't even know that things are pricing up that way.

Its not just Y awards, flying Qf where the fees are ridiculous, try J to USA.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Pays to look at all options.

Recently booked:
MEL-DPO
JQ $55 e/w BUT need to add luggage 20kg for $19 plus "oversize handling fee" $25 (as taking golf clubs). So $99 total.
QF $89 incl 23kg and no oversize fee.

My thoughts exactly. It makes you wonder about the value of points these days, in terms of Y reward seats on international legs. Not much at all really, is the answer. Curious to know, by the way, what they make of samh004's suggestion. Do let us know if they get back to you on that.

Apparently they reduced the additional fees, taxes and other surcharges on international award redemption bookings not so long ago (last year?) but it doesn't seem to make much difference. And the online booking system can't stand my multi-city searches, even with direct routes

SYD – LDH is a relatively cheap domestic hop that I've been considering, but accommodation options are few and far between (not to mention the premium prices) because of the maximum of 400 visitors at a time. So the overall trip cost would be on par with a hop overseas.

That we did, looked all around our dates and the figures quoted above were the best (and about middle of normal buy price), sure of course at times can be cheaper on special, the amount above is for 2 pax not one, what I am complaining about is the fees plus the fact that the fares are with in $100 of paying for them plus using 57K in points. Be it JQ or JQ via Qantas both require add ons like baggage, seat selection etc.

I know DPS not DPO ;)

Yep there are plenty of "poor" options to multiple destinations.
