Qantas extends current status Until at least March 2021

Status

Lots of things not very fair at the moment...e.g.. toilet paper and food hoarding ( and export), lack of masks and ppe for front line medicos, people not respecting social distancing etc. But think QF just freezing status for all for a defined period wouldve been the best option for all much like the government is going to do to businesses shortly, but I don't think their IT system allowed it.

I would just be happy if they pushed out the anniversary for the same period that they don’t fly ( maybe plus a month) and keep the status credits already earned. For example, if they don’t fly for four months and your anniversary date is 31 May your new date would be 30 September. This still gives you 12/13 months to obtain the required credits.
That's too logical and would go against the model of ensuring some people are disadvantaged with any offerings.

No one is being disadvantaged or harmed, it's just that some are more advantaged than others.
If someone else gets an extra 12 months and you don't, it's not harming you.
I very much agree with you here. I've come to think of it as people "Winning (more or less so)" from the extension. It's a better outcome for everyone than it was before the change. I get some sour grapes that it seems unfair that some get those extra months of status. I understand it. I think it's a bit disappointing given the current world situation and priorities, but it also is human nature.

I know given the current state of the world thinking about airline status is a bit like worrying about whether there's enough ice for the martinis while sitting on the Titanic. At the end of the day its QFs loyalty program so its their call who gets status extended and who doesn't at this point. If you were loyal enough to have already re-qualified for your next membership year, and especially if you actually paid your own money to requalify rather than rely on your employer for your status, just be grateful that those that did not and would not requalify, are being looked after.... think of it like if you went out and bought yourself some $3000 shoes and then for some reason the shoe shop decided to provide those shoes to everyone for free, even people that prefer thongs or going barefoot....except you dont get another pair of new shoes cos you already bought some. Everyone has shoes now so no problems, apart from that 3k you spent.... :cool:Namaste.

Yep I am in the same boat.
My renewal is 1st May 2020
Already qualified for Platinum for 20/21 and got this same extension mail which does not help me for next year.
Booked 3 international flights on DSC in Feb for May,Jun and July. These are some of my main earning destinations / times. All 3 events have been postponed or cancelled.
I called and have been informed that if I cancel/bank the flights, my DSC remains,BUT, ONLY if I rebook AND fly within 12 months of my original booking date of 23rd Feb.
My USA trip in July 2020 to a sales conference, it likely to be cancelled and the next one will be July 2021. So I will loose the DSC for 20/21 and also not have it for that conference in 2022.
All this means that the potential number of flights which I will be able to do in 20/21 is going to be severely reduced.
SO I do hope they come to the party and look at additional help in the future.
Also in the same boat. My year rolls over on 31 March and I already have the required SC to retain platinum until March 2021. My DSC business class trip to Europe via everywhere leaving at the start of October also highly likely to be cancelled due to the main travel reason being cancelled (a special 60th birthday in Europe - the birthday girl was leaving in August and that will now not happen). So my ability to earn sufficient SC's has taken a big ding, and given that there is pretty much going to be no flying for at least 6 months of my requal period, I almost certainly will not retain unless Qantas helps me out the way it has helped everyone who failed to requal this year. First world problem, I know.

Disagree strongly. I am disadvantaged, I proactively strove to get Platinum this year For the first time. I had the 600 to retain gold, so I would get a Gold anyway for next year. I earned another 300 and had bookings in May to earn the additional 300. ( I have refunds pending for those) My year ends on 31 May. I spent good money to earn those extra 300 which are now wasted.

My QF business rewards membership tier was extended by 12 months today
I got the same email but unless they extend our QBR L2 until 2022 it is wrong - as our L2 happened late last year it was already at that level until April 2021.

There is another side of this coin.

Consider if your status year ends 30 November.

Brilliant.. whammo you've had status extended until November 30, 2021. Say you're Platinum.

Any SC's earned between now and 30 November this year become more or less worthless, excepting to add to lifetime tally or possibly to up to the next status level. P1 is a stretch for most Plat's but even if you're Silver or Gold, you may not earn enough but you may earn some more between now and then.

If you up to the next status level great - you're still good till November 30, 2021... but let's say you don't make enough... but you make a fair chunk. They give you no real short term benefit, unless you make a LT level, which you would have done regardless.

Some may see that as a disadvantage - specially if, for example, they were working towards retaining their current status level.

So the inducement there is nil... and may even send those pax (who care about all of this) elsewhere given the free ramp up.

(assuming of course that any kind f regular travel may return by say September... which is a big if).

just a hypothetical of course, but there is another side to all thise that may potentially affect some.

just a few SC off LTG here and if BP can get their stupid sign up process working will get another few SC closer. Once LTG, Im redirecting my future spend to BA to hopefully get their LTP equivalent, if BA still exists then, and look for BFOD on Asian/ME OW carriers. If OW goes cough up then Im stuffed I guess.

Clearly disadvantaged if someone has 12 months to earn 1200 SCs and others only have 6 months or less to earn the same number of SCs assuming international travel returns by December which at this stage is borderline.

If you're going to give something then treat everyone the same not some better than others.

Would a one-year extension of people's membership year be fairer?

The way I see it, QF is giving everyone exactly the same offer, but due to different membership years, current now cancelled bookings, future bookings, different stages of SC earn, people will benefit differently.

I have a feeling no matter what QF offers, someone will find a way to be disadvantaged.

I would disagree with this. I flew / paid / qualified for status from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021 (i.e not a status extension). Now because of all the goings on I can not access any of the ‘benefits’ that I have earned.

Now compare that to someone that has had their status extended that would not have requalified - yes they are also not able to get any benefit from their status but they didn’t earn it.

Consider this scenario for comparison. Once person in paid J’s seat doesn’t work and they can’t be moved to another for the flight. Do you think they deserve compensation? Now, if that person in J instead of being paid was a complimentary upgrade and the seat doesn’t work - do they still deserve compensation?

To do Serfy's suggestion they'd have to not only extend the expiry, but then also do a montly run for each membership anniversary that passes to then re-add toe pre-expiry SC to the new membership year (or actually come to think of it, just cancel the monthly job to do the roll over). I suspect that same roll over job probably also expires points and does other housekeeping activities and they'd probably be loath to change any of that automation. I know I would be if I was in the responsible team there (if I still had a job!)
With the current extension criteria, they still have to update things and there's not much difference in effort diving into the automation for that and what I proposed, especially if just basing qualification on 24 months of activity through 2021.

Don't disagree as I commented the other day. My comment was about implementation of such. QFF is such a mess during normal times built on legacy systems that it's probably a minor miracle they're able to process status extensions at all :) I mean seriously we all know how poor they can be.

While I'm not a programmer I've seen enough projects go headfirst into a brick wall trying to do something seemingly obvious and simple it's not funny.

Haven't looked at the nitty gritty of the extension but it appears I'm one of the lucky ones - my membership year ticked over at the end of Feb so by the first of March I had zero SC's. I did purchase tickets during the recent DSC to qualify me again but there's little chance those flights will go ahead.

By my reading I will retain gold until the end of Feb 2022
