Qantas exploring bunk beds in cargo hold for ULH flights

Not sure that's how Chatham House Rules is meant to work.....

However using the hold has always intrigued me, not sure why really. Navy style bunk beds could work surely!

Oh dear, I misread the word "exploring" in the subject of this thread as "exploding"...

Or just use the overhead bins they have today..

Only possible on a "time share" basis - they'd have to empty them of the PE ottomans, crew bags, headphone bags, etc etc that currently clutter the space supposedly for passenger carry-ons.

Why is it these things are *never* taken in to consideration by QF when they order new refits?

Regards,

BD

Cattle class indeed. Just put them in the pens in cargo area with no windows and you can hose it out afterwards.

Wonder how much extra they will charge for the "privilege" over whY?

Some people who are that way inclined may find some perverse please in travelling down there without windows!
It takes a lot of weirdness to make the world go round and to know how some people get their kicks.
I love window views, but some people who sit by the window only seem to just fall asleep leaning against the window frame.
They might pay to have no windows!
""Premium cargo hold service.""
No disturbance by drink service, or noisy kids, ... minimal queue for the loos... if they fit one or two down there.

I believe AJ is just taking a page out of the playbook of FR CEO Michael O'Leary.

AJ knows the Australian media will publish anything he comes up with verbatim and QF gets millions in free advertising as a result.

It would be interesting to know the actual value of the free advertising QF has received with the launch of PER-LHR. If they canned the route tomorrow, QF have probably made a profit overall.

Even if they have no real plans on launching PER-CDG etc, it would be smart for them to mention it every month or so....

Said one thing then did another: “you do need to a have a premium first class product so we'll never get rid of it." - Can’t book F on QF9 now.

There’s a long history of airlines saying one thing and doing another.

My thoughts too.

And drop in a few US cities as potential non-stops and you might get free media coverage in US as well.

Bunk beds similar to roomettes on trains could work, as long as they can work out the safety implications - oxgen and egress to the main deck for an evacuation.

IIRC Lufthansa was exploring this over a decade ago and went nowhere. Lufthansa also had downstairs lavatories in A340 (I think), at least for a while.

This is QF telling the manufacturers: if you don't give us everything we want we'll get you to do a lot of extra work anyway so you may as well put the effort in to deliver what we're after.

Still do! On their A346s. It's a fun thing to try.

While the WCs are equipped with oxygen masks (from the ceiling), it might be a different engineering issue to equip some sort of fold down bunk for the same. Plus the evacuation issue - not sure how that would work. Gotta get everyone out of their seats and back up to the main deck. Potentially in the dark.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yes, given the 15 orders they may get eventually QF, I’m sure they are laughing all the way to the canteen.
